Re: General DEC3000 thread

There is no such thing as a "512 byte disc". All CDROMs have a standard format. The only variance is the SCSI mode parameters that the drive reports to the host (whether blocks are 512 or 2048 bytes and how many blocks are in the disc). That was needed because early workstations' PROMs we...

Re: General DEC3000 thread

It's also probably worth mentioning that I updated my particular DEC 3000/400 to the final firmware update successfully about two months ago using the first drive (the one used for OpenBSD, a Pioneer) so it should have no problem booting the most recent versions of VMS, as that was a known issue wit...

General DEC3000 thread

Rather than start a new thread every time I run into trouble, it's probably easiest and best to both consolidate/catalog every problem I have into one thread and not flood a fairly slow forum with endless short threads. Current question I have is: how much trouble has anyone else had with an old wor...

Re: building current CDE on Alpha

why not using the original tru64? it comes with cde by default Had to netboot the openbsd installer in order to get it working, been fighting with various drives ever since. I picked up a toshiba xm-5701b last week that should work, I think, but I'm still waiting for more hard drives to arrive. I c...

Re: VAXstation 3100/m38 and VAXserver 3100

It's got 4Mb built in, and takes boards up to 28MB for 32MB total. Not really what I meant to imply, any ram board at all that works for these things is very rare, and a 16MB 3100 is a very capable machine. When I had it working it would happily do decwindows via ethernet. The M38 is an upgraded M30...

VAXstation 3100/m38 and VAXserver 3100

I've got a formerly working 3100/38 (upgraded) with 12mb ram expansion board installed for a full 16mb. It will provide output until it gets to testing the memory, and I've tried booting it with and without the memory board, so that seems to be solid. I picked up the vaxserver after the vaxstation d...

Re: Part number for DEC 3000 keyboard cable

current status: chugging along calmly 24/7 with openBSD 6.0. everything works fine, but i think the problem with the cd drive is a matter of timing issues between the old scsi 2x cdrom and the adapter. once i buy another drive & adapter i'm going to attempt to use the old scsi drive i have with ...

building current CDE on Alpha

CDE's ancient, but that means that it should run quite well on old hardware. it's also open source now , along with motif. and i've been banging my head against building it on my 3000 running openbsd 6 for the last week. can anyone else try building it? doesnt really matter what system you're runnin...

Re: New Tru64 media

i've been watching that for a while hoping the price would come down, it's way too much to ask imo. can you rip/post the 4.0 set somewhere? it's actually really important to have that available to run the genera lisp-machine emulator and that version doesnt seem to exist in the wild. afaik it's not ...

let us know, always good to see an alpha alive in the wilderness. also if you want to pass those DS10s on to others definitely give us dibs!

Re: Part number for DEC 3000 keyboard cable

wanted to drop an update on this project. i managed to find, through a hell of a lot of deep googling and fighting with HP's garbage FTP server (hidden folders on a public ftp with important files ffs) the firmware update that i needed for the system, which i was able to burn and install nicely. Unf...

Appears as though I will need to update the firmware, but for the time being I've got VMS6.2 running on there.

Re: Part number for DEC 3000 keyboard cable

It can be a struggle finding CDROM drives that they can boot from; I had good luck with Toshiba XM-4101B, and the notes on the Sun compatible CD-ROM page should mostly also apply. The DEC RZ drives are all sufficiently old that their bearings are likely to be shot. I don't think any of them were ne...

Re: Part number for DEC 3000 keyboard cable

ok theres an rz28 and an rz26, the rz26 doesnt even spin up and the rz28 sounds like a buzzsaw so i'm going to take both out and we'll see where i can get with the ancient scsi drive that i had working in the vaxen with a fresh install of vms 8.3. the RRD42 that was installed does not appear to work...
