Re: Next Project Machine?

The Octane/O2K/Onyx2 drive sleds seem extremely desirable! I didn't really think they were all that rare, as the first lot of SGIs I bought came with plenty, but when I bought my Origin, the seller assured me that it had the drive sled. When I sold an Octane2 recently, the buyer made sure to check f...

Re: Onyx Problems, seemingly power related

So, I've been looking at the system controller, looking up chips, and probing around with a multimeter for a few days, and I must say, I'm stumped. Where does the actual voltage measurement take place? Not POKA (done by the voltage comparators and NAND latches on the VCAM), but the actual measuremen...

Is it free? I might be interested if shipping isn't crazy.

Hamei is hamei. Entertaining to be sure (and might I add, absolutely nails the written Scottish accent), but genuinely interesting with legitimately helpful or contributive things to say. ivelegacy though... Some people don't get the point even if you throw at them a HUGE stone that shows the POINT ...

Re: Onyx Problems, seemingly power related

I wouldn't put it past the Dallas chip, though it would be a very strange thing to get messed up by the chip. One thing I have noticed is that as the system runs for longer (presumably due to heat) the shutdowns happen sooner and sooner after powering on. On the first boot in a while, I can get to I...

Re: Onyx Problems, seemingly power related

I am looking at the system controller board as we speak. It appears to make its own power from the 48V of the OLS, but also monitors other power rails (I think). I have recently been in touch with an Ottawan SGI owner named Dave via email, which lines up pretty well with Dr. Dave's info. He gave me ...

Re: 6.2 / 5.3 packages

I think he means that he prefers 6.5.30, but on his Indy, which has to run an older version, he's not bothered by the older OS because he only uses the system to capture composite video :) .

Re: Onyx Problems, seemingly power related

Alright, update time. So, it seems like the voltages the VCAM is making are very reasonable since I added the resistors to adjust it. Both the System Controller's voltage screen and external measurement using a multimeter confirm that they are well within spec and not much to worry about. I probed a...

Re: Onyx Problems, seemingly power related

So my dad (who understands power circuitry of this sort far better than I do) and I fiddled with the resistors on the VCAM for a while. The official SGI documentation is wrong about the positions of the regulators, the 5.2V one is closer to the side and the 12V is further inwards on the board. We ad...

I did get it to run for a little while, long enough to run a demo or two when I first got it, but it's definitely not stable yet. "little" is funny, seeing as it weighs more than I do :D .

Re: Onyx Problems, seemingly power related

My multimeter connected to the test pins and the System Controller's "Voltage Status" screen say the same thing. The -12V line is actually more like -13.1V. So, my monitoring circuitry is fine, but the actual voltage is wrong. Now it's a matter of figuring out why. Would you suggest replac...

Understandable, but a shame. I wanted to see Kronos with IRENKA running on it for the full "Nekochan Operating System".

Re: Aezora - first SGI machine (Octane, 2xR10K 250 MHz, 1 GB RAM, SE)

Nice! Glad you finally got an Octane. A lot of the Nekoware package managers have some problems related to servers going down, but ehh, it works if you point it at the main Nekochan packages. It's slow though.
