How do you get your SGI machines?

I will soon be picking up a load of Octanes, Indys, an O2 and an Indigo, along with some accessories from a guy who seems to be selling off his collection. This will be my first SGI stuff, and it's certainly a lot more than most people start off with, but there are a few other systems I might eventu...

...a Raptor TALOS, if that gets off the ground. https://www.raptorengineering.com/TALOS/prerelease.php Haven't heard of that, interesting project. I hope if it succeeds they lower the price after a while or release a cheaper version, that price is a bit hard to stomach as it is but if it were somew...

Re: Funny scammer phone call

Someday I want to run a Windows VM with black desktop background, hidden taskbar, and a VNC connection to an Octane or something. When scammers call, I will open teamviewer so they are controlling the VM and then quickly alt tab to the VNC client. Watch as scammer tries to figure out IRIX.

That doesn't sound very 90s at all. Back then, MIPS was a pretty decent competitor for x86. And SGI had some really bitchin' graphics hardware on top of that. The combination of a powerful CPU and a powerful GPU is what made those machines shine. What you're suggesting sounds like some sort of spec...

If SGI announced a non-x86 graphics workstation similar to their 90s machines today, would you buy it?

Warning - Technologically unlikely and nonsensical from a business point of view hypothetical scenario ahead Let's say it uses a highly parallel array of ARM CPUs to achieve a performance advantage over a modern Xeon workstation similar to the Indy's advantage over PC's of the time, and is priced at...

Re: FT : mac pro 5,1 for sgi stuff..

Hi, I am near Montreal. I will soon be getting a load of SGI stuff, and would trade some for a Mac Pro. I can't help you with a CPU, but I will be getting some drives and three complete octane systems, one of which I want to keep. The other two systems are medium spec Octanes in working condition. T...

Re: Can somebody who has an Indy take some measurements of case parts please?

Just do us all a big favor and do not use those nasty cheap blindingly bright red or blue LED's for anything . Bright Pink and Bright Green it is then! Be sure to also repaint it in really awfully applied glossy red paint and then draw really awful art on it for that full "tasteless rich guy's...

I am planning to buy an Octane which the guy claims has two 350mhz CPUs. Did he mistype 250?

I can't find mention of a 350, but I know a lot of SGI stuff is not very well documented. Does this exist? Could it be a 250 or 360 and he mistyped it?

Re: Can somebody who has an Indy take some measurements of case parts please?

I did a paper mockup. Everything fits, but height is close enough that I might need to drill some holes in the Indy. My 970 is thick.

No, they are fakes made for the movies. The only real SGI laptops were an uncommon ruggedized modified Indy made by a third party and a one-off O2 laptop with a weird keyboard made by some SGI engineers in their spare time.

Re: Can somebody who has an Indy take some measurements of case parts please?

That's my plan. I'm still working out how to mount the motherboard and slice the case up. I'll try to get to the garage and take some measurements today. Actually, the AthenaPower AP-MFATX40P8 looks like a good choice for PSU. It was designed for 1U rackmount servers, so it's small and long, well s...

That's my plan. I'm still working out how to mount the motherboard and slice the case up. I'll try to get to the garage and take some measurements today. My plan is to keep the PSU mounted to the case as is, but gut it and cut off the top and right (from front of computer) sides to make the inside ...
