Re: YAY! My twins are starting to look twinly.

praetor, you're also welcome to render on my Origin2000 if you ever have a bigger job. It's not even turned on most of the time, so I don't mind. You'll just have to tell me how to use softimage enough to render :) .

Re: YAY! My twins are starting to look twinly.

Yeah, the front cover is one of the first pieces that has to come off, so I would be surprised if you tossed it with the drive. More likely would be throwing away the grey cover that goes over the front of the bare drive inside the system, since it looks a little like it could be part of the drive w...

Re: YAY! My twins are starting to look twinly.

Too much glue? Happened to me once. Fun fact: this is the same drive as was in the Origin2000, and I fixed my O2K's as well. If you can't find a faceplate, I could send you the drive with the O2K faceplate. It isn't the same, but I think it would fit and it's much simpler. Ian probably has one though.

Re: YAY! My twins are starting to look twinly.

I have quite a few O2 CDROMs that won't eject, and I know how to fix them (done it three times now), but I don't think I have any spare skins CD-ROM front covers (in fact, only one of my O2s has a completely intact one). Ian has some in stock, you could ask him how much he would charge you for one a...

Re: VNC to Origin2000

That appears to be on. It appears that the Origin is expecting itself to have graphics, which, being an Origin, it doesn't.

Re: VNC to Origin2000

I get "X: windowsystem not enabled".
Managed to turn that on using chkconfig, now it says "X: /usr/gfx/gfxinit not found".

Re: VNC to Origin2000

I think I installed it normally, so I presume X is there. Do I have to start it somehow? Sorry for being so clueless, I really just have no experience with headless IRIX.

Re: VNC to Origin2000

You need to setup X since VNC grabs X11 frames and transmits them. I know on Linux you can have a virtual framebuffer device for VNC, but I don't think IRIX has anything like that. So how do you set up X? Do I have to install it? Turn it on in a config file? I have no experience with headless SGIs,...

VNC to Origin2000

Hi Nekochan, I'm currently trying to get a VNC connection to my Origin2000 working. The system is running IRIX 6.5.30, and I've installed neko_tightvnc. It's on the network, and I have command line access via the serial console. How do I make tightvnc actually work as a VNC server? I've done this be...

Re: How frequently you use your SGI (in 2017)?

Oh of course cables hidden. I am in the process of designing it as a single card. It would look like a modern graphics card, covered by a shroud (maybe I could put the SGI cube on it!). The main wires are as follows: GA620T Ethernet <-> ODROID-XU4S Ethernet GA620T 5V Power Pins --> ODROID-XU4S 5V Po...

Re: Are we a dying breed?

We do have some new "young" members as you put it. I'm 14, LarBob is 16. Not sure about others, but I think it's safe to say that even if there is at some point a silent switchover where the majority of Nekochan users learned what SGI was only after they were acquired (after all, I was onl...

Re: How frequently you use your SGI (in 2017)?

That's what I was talking about. A Netgear GA620T network card has room for a small blower fan, ODROID-XU4S (off an HC1), a USB ethernet adapter, and 3D printed air shroud while still remaining single slot. We could make a board that plugs into a PCI slot on an SGI and contains everything needed to ...

Hmm, pondering it. $100 is a little high for me to buy it immediately, but ultimately a fair price as, as PD1 says, it's rare.

If you deal with Octanes often, you can also sometimes tell a dual CPU system by its weight. Mine is certainly heavier than the single CPU ones.

Re: Dodoid Mini Indigo is now on sale!

Cool! Canada Post shipping to the US is pretty fast then. Do note, since your two are packed a little differently, when removing the items from the box, open it up and then take out the piece of bubble wrap, then lift the LG box out. The power supply will come with it (its prongs are stuck in). Then...
