Re: [ebay][de] 2 x Octane (not mine)

I'd be tempted to go have a look. Berlin is 4 hours by train and I could get my German-speaking girlfriend with me and give the machine a shot.

However, I'm out for a week (holidays in Malaysia yeay). I'll shoot the seller a question anyway.

Re: Hot-rodding my G5 - storage performance

If I were going to buy an Intellistation, I would probably choose the POWER5-based 285, but mostly because it's beefier and not from any especial objection I have to the G5 (or for that matter the POWER4) in that particular application. I happily own both a 285 and a Quad, and I guess I can help 1b...

Re: "Intergraph ZX10" problem with AGP Pro / Wildcat 7110

Now my question is if its maybe the matter that the AGP Pro port doesnt provide enough current to get a dual GPU card running. System requirements, after a bit of Googling, mention 50 W of required power and AGP 8x. https://www.rakuten.com/prod/3dlabs-wildcat4-7110-graphics-card-256mb/10336809.html...

Re: Rumors of Oracle ending Solaris development

If they were planning to EOL Solaris you'd think they'd take down their page lobbying HP-UX, AIX and Red Hat users to switch to it: http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/server-storage/solaris11/overview/evaluate-1530234.html I'm not sure. Corporations tend to be very slow in updating their web pages, ...

Re: Hot-rodding my G5 - storage performance

FWIW, VPC on my Quad runs well enough, but I like the older VPCs, especially on OS 9 where they can just run flat out. VPC 3 I think was the pinnacle for DOS and Win9x gaming. Thanks for all the interesting info. I have the same experience. VPC works. I've heard one of the Connectix VPCs for OS 9 s...

Re: Raptor Talos POWER8 Workstation

Nah, you don't need native PCI, as you can convert PCI to PCI-e: http://www.ebay.com/itm/PCIe-PCI-Express-X1-to-PCI-Adapter-Card-Riser-Extender-32bit-Asmedia-1083-Chip-/272580290247?hash=item3f770d26c7:g:U1YAAOSw4CFYvk5D (although I haven't seen any PCI-X to PCI-e) This sounds hard to fit in honest...

Re: Hot-rodding my G5 - storage performance

The G3 and G4 had a very fast means of automatically treating areas of memory as little endian which was used most notably in VirtualPC, but this is not universal to the PowerPC line (the 604 and the G5 don't have it, for example). The point is, now you don't have to worry about it, and software sh...

Re: Raptor Talos POWER8 Workstation

They don't come with it out of the box, but getting a compatible card is not hard. I have a 135P in my POWER6 and X comes up with that. I can't imagine that it wouldn't still work on a POWER8 or 9 or any of the other graphics card FRUs. I'm assuming that the Talos will come with at least one legacy...

Re: Raptor Talos POWER8 Workstation

AIX does not suffer from all of the issues present in x.org, so... it has to be AIX capable. :p Does IBM still manufacture tower POWER boxes? The cheapest IBM server box should do the job, no? And should be quieter than 1U and 2U units. Do they come with any graphics card that could load X? I guess...

Re: GXT6500P in other platforms

From my own experience and research: - Contributors to the CRUX Linux (I think it was CRUX) made a patch so it is supported on Linux. I'm not sure the patch has ever made to mainstream. It is fairly well documented, look it up. Important caveat: there's no hardware acceleration whatsoever, so I don'...

Re: Hot-rodding my G5 - storage performance

It's fast enough that I can QEMU my way to backwards compatibility, and leave the slow burning dumpster fire that is current iterations of macOS behind. Are you planning to use Linux as your main driver? Nowadays I use whichever combo of OS-Application works best for the task in hand. This means I ...

According to the benchmarks online, yes... the trashcan seems to be outdated IO-wise.
