Re: O2 R12K 400MHz, DCD, 512MB, Barco Chameleon

At some point I must look at acquiring the appropriate 3D software for this machine. After all, this was my first SGI machine and it's the reason why I went on to acquiring more SGI machines. (The first SGI machine that I ever saw in the flesh was an O2.) Even though they're known to be shaky little...

If you have a decent Indigo2 Impact to sell, then I'm interested.

Though, I don't see any sleds or drives. That has to be a pain.

3ddoc has drive sleds for sale on ebay, so you would be able to acquire them quite easily.

Neat Tezro or sale in New York (not mine)

There's a rather neat Tezro currently for sale on eBay. It's located in New York (quad 700MHz, 6GB RAM) no hard drive sleds though and there appears to be a bit of damage to the plate with the cube logo on it.

Tezro

As there is a DCD fitted, it more than likely has a V12 graphics option fitted.

Re: Introducing D1

My guess is that it's an odroid xu4 situated neatly on a PCI network card with network to usb interface fitted to allow you to run an OS on the odroid xu4 that runs current webpages efficiently through a remote X window in IRIX.

Re: Welcome!

This site was recommended to me by Ian Mapleson, when I asked him for help regarding the what I then thought to be defective IR3 system in my Onyx2. I haven’t been here for very long at all and it’s really great to see that there are members such as Dexter1 who were here at the beginning, who are st...

At some point, when I can factor it in, I would like to get my hands on one of these:

It's certainly not something that I would have an everyday practical use for, but it sure would come in handy in order to carry out proper SMT repairs on my ageing fleet of systems.

Re: Onyx deskside memory issues

Take a pic of the damaged board, as we may be able to help you to identify the damaged components In the past, I have scavenged SMT components of spare (broken) boards to fix damaged ones in my systems with success. Capacitors are usually not critical in terms of their value, depending on where they...

Re: Maintaining Hardware / fesability of keeping hardware running

Not every SGI will survive for forever, but if it's honestly something we care about (and I have every indication that we do), we certainly have the skills, knowledge, and technology to keep a lot of units of a lot of models of SGIs running for a lot of years into the future. Nothing is forever. Es...

Re: Maintaining Hardware / fesability of keeping hardware running

If the machine is plugged in all the time, then parts of the power supply are always energised. Inrush current is rather bad for capacitors, and the caps in a power supply are more likely to experience this phenomenon when the power supply is allowed to discharge completely as a result of the machin...

Re: Maintaining Hardware / fesability of keeping hardware running

It seems like you're having quite a time with all the things blowing and all, my deepest sympathies. :( At some point, all of our SGI systems are going to need to be recapped. If a machine is left standing, for a long time, as mine generally do, it might eventually be wise to have it's power supply ...

Re: sgi vr hardware reccomendations

It would be awesome to get your hands on some of the original VPL virtual reality hardware, like that which was used in "The Lawnmower Man".

Although probably very crude, it would be correct for the period.

Tell him that he must make use of a bigger, double-walled box and use bubble wrap with large bubbles to wrap the machine, (At least 3-4 complete layers) and then fill all of the spaces between the box and the wrapped machine with foam "peanuts". The bubble wrap will offer protection agains...
