Re: your latest purchase

Why bother with laptops, as you pay so much and get so little from a hardware pint of view? You certainly don't get bang for your buck when you buy a laptop, do you? Unless you need it for work of cause? All of that being said, the IBM ThinkPads from the 90's were extremely snazzy, well built machin...

A perfect example of how they will loose market share due to their consumer based practice of planned obsolescence!

Re: How can Apple reclaim its dominance over PC-based workstations?

I agree it'd be good, but it also flies in the face of Apple's recent approach to locking everything down. Slowly but surely more and more of their systems have moved from changeable components to soldered down ones - usually so Apple can make more money by encouraging people to purchase higher spe...

Re: Fuel DMediaPro DM6 PCI Digital Video

Very true, though mopar's quad-1GHz system is a damn good deal anyway. :D As always though, this stuff boils down to the whacko world of supply and demand. Why sell something cheap when someone else will happily buy it for a lot more? That's just throwing money away. The market sorts itself out in ...

I think it has an XSGi[?] or similar, I can't really recall, but that door does look gorgeous.

It's a really nice finishing touch to an IRIS indigo. :D

Re: Fuel DMediaPro DM6 PCI Digital Video

Hi Ian, I understand that the demand for the DM6 is driven by industry, as they often have no choice but to replace their existing hardware with the same hardware if it fails. I was talking more from the hobbyist point of view. For example, a member from this forum could buy mopar's quad 1GHz Tesro ...

He is in Italy.

They also generally cost allot to ship around if they're not local due to their weight and special packaging requirements. (brittle plastics etc.)

Re: How can Apple reclaim its dominance over PC-based workstations?

I agree completely.

They absolutely have to open the next Mac Pro to third party enhancement.

It gives you more options and allows you to keep the system up to date.

Re: Fuel DMediaPro DM6 PCI Digital Video

Just a stupid question but would a DM-3 with a VBOB+DM-5 add on card, fitted to a Tezro not be able to carry out the same or similar function to the DM-6, as it's allot cheaper?

Re: Fuel DMediaPro DM6 PCI Digital Video

Hi Ian, I haven't been home yet, as I now live and work in Pretoria, and only seldom make it down to Cape Town (where all of my SGI gear resides), but I might go down to Cape Town next week on the 28th, so I will let you know as soon as I have it in hand. :D

Nick.
