Re: Best workstation to start?

The O2 is a very cool little box, it's powerful enough to give you a really good IRIX experience. As far as cost is concerned, this can vary rather drastically for all SGI models and this depends on spec as well as the cosmetic condition of the machine. The Indy, for example is usually a rather chea...

Re: Sunfire v880 with XVR-4000

That's the thing with rare, old hardware, there's almost nothing that makes use of it! I will talk to the company that I'm getting it from regarding this subject. The machine is costing me quite a bit, so I might have to wait for a while before I can buy the necessary software for it. (properly lice...

Re: Sunfire v880 with XVR-4000

Congratulations! She's a beauty both in terms of appearance and the rare technology of the XVR-4000. Have fun! Thanks. I just thought that if I was going to dabble in SUN Microsystems, that I would go for a visualization server, due to my interest in SGI. The V880 gives you the best of both worlds:...

Re: "dubious" - Tezro 4x700 with V12/DCD/DM3

Interesting aside, when I go the graphical UI "About This System" (is that steal from Macs ;-) ), it reports as: "Onyx3 InfinitePerformance, Fuel" Also I am surprise that Tezro is actually quite quiet. My Mac Pro is louder than Tezro I think. Nice system! My system also reports ...

Re: Help Octane with lcd/tft monitors

Here's a list of monitors known to work with the Octane from the Octane Hardware Aggregator: - Monitors Note: A properly wired 13w3 to HD15 adapter or cable is required. Most generic 13w3 to HD15 adapters are wired to the Sun version of 13w3 which may cause display issues if used with an Octane. If ...

Re: your latest purchase

One thing that we can all probably agree upon I suppose, is that It doesn't pay to chase the latest hardware (as I've done in the past), unless it gives you a notable advantage in the industry that you work in, as it's always bettered by something much cheaper in the not too distant future. ;)

Re: your latest purchase

I agree with you that GPU's have come along way since the GPU offerings made available on the Mac Pro. Just remember that I've been using this machine since 2014 and that by upgrading it I will still be able to push it for quit a few more years, without having to go and spend more money unnecessaril...

Re: your latest purchase

For the price of that mac pro you could buy a laptop that will literally run rings around it. Your argument for 'bang for the buck' was valid, had you not outed yourself as a MacPro6,1 owner 8-) I accept the fact that you like laptops over desktops.(we all have the right to choose the type of syste...

Re: your latest purchase

I understand that you can make good use of a laptop on a flight or in a coffee shop or to act as a terminal to access an SGI machine over serial. :D In my case though, the two worst computer investments that I've ever made were laptop's and as a result, I just loathe them, and will never own another...
