Re: WTB: Cherokee PSU

Thanks for posting the pics! :D I for one haven't seen the inside of one of these units before, so this is rather informative, as it shows that they didn't glue the components together, as you often see in switch-mode power supplies. this makes it easier to service. As for the components underneath ...

Re: WTB: Cherokee PSU

It's a pity you didn't take any photo's of the blown circuitry, as this could be a weak spot in the design, that can maybe be fixed before it fails catastrophically.

Re: WTB: Cherokee PSU

Isn’t it possible to recap the blown power supply that you have? Or is the problem not capacitor related?

Re: Things that make your blood boil

You only have to listen to the opening track on "The Dark Side of the Moon" by Pink Floyd (recorded by Allan Parsons at Abby Road Studios) on a high fidelity system with a frequency response down to 10Hz and you will understand what I mean when it comes to the recording methods used in th...

Re: Things that make your blood boil

I beg to differ, sort of. Although I don't consider myself an audiophile by any means, I only buy classical music on cd, with a strong preference for early music which has had a golden age especially since the 1980es up unto the present day. The recording quality on modern recordings is usually fan...

Re: Things that make your blood boil

The whole high-res audio one annoys me too in general. Especially as the resolution of the audio makes little difference as long as music continues to be brickwalled and dynamically compressed to shit during the mastering process. High-resolution shit is still shit. There’s a good reason why most a...

Re: Features that a vintage machine must have in order to spark your interest?

In the past, I have seen one, which looked pretty much complete go on eBay for allot less than $30,000. This one is just an example of what’s currently available, if you want to splash out and get one right now, which I certainly don’t want to right now, and especially not for that price. The rarity...

Re: Features that a vintage machine must have in order to spark your interest?

Speaking of the PIXAR Image Computer, there is currently one for sale for a mere $30,000!

This is definitely one of my holy grails when it comes to collectable graphics orientated vintage computers!

Re: Vintage machine features that spark your interest?

Confirm that the Oxygen 402 would work in my AlphaStation, as it appears to have a fairly large chip marked "digital" on it? According to the User's Manual it should be Alpha-compatible. Thats nice to know, but it requires Windows NT and the current firmware on my AlphaStation doesn't all...

Re: Vintage machine features that spark your interest?

The nostalgia part is important too. As I've mentioned before, my Indigo2 is my favourite SGI, despite my Fuel being many times more powerful - because I have a stronger nostalgic connection with it (first ever SGI I saw in use). Although the Indigo2 IMPACT wasn't the first SGI machine that I ever ...

Re: How to fix "out of range" on Octane now?

When you say log in via serial you mean to use my o2 to log into the Octane with a serial cable? Sorry I am still new to SGI networking. Going to attempt it today since I have a lot of software installers on the o2 and don't have a CD rom for the Octane yet. I digress. This would mean using some ki...

Re: How to fix "out of range" on Octane now?

Try going in via serial and logging in as root and typing the command:

/usr/gfx/setmon -x 1280x1024_60 to set the default display mode

It worked on my onyx2, so it might work on the octane.

Re: Vintage machine features that spark your interest?

That said, I'm really not interested in modern systems either. The latest NVidia cards are incredibly powerful but for some reason they just don't fascinate me as much as an old 3DLabs Wildcat or Oxygen 402. Confirm that the Oxygen 402 would work in my AlphaStation, as it appears to have a fairly l...
