Re: MaXX is back!

You just named questionable creations, like systemd, pulseaudio, udev. At least with systemd, not all alive distributions took it, and mainstream ones had large debates on whether to take it or not. Many are looking into development of own initialization system. Also you just showed that Red Hat is...

Re: MaXX is back!

As for supporting anything but Linux, I see no point. Yes, Linux is lesser quality product, than *BSDs are, but vendors of big commercial software are all around Linux, not some BSD. So Linux is the best choice just because of popularity, available software base and hardware support. Its just what ...

Wouldn't it be easier to set up an NFS share with the files on it?

Re: Using stock Ksh instead of Bash

I personally prefer slightly more user friendly shells (bash, zsh, tcsh) to ksh. The shell does not really effect the way the system works, except to make your life easier. Now, I stick to MIPSPro over GCC as much as I can (until I hit something that really will not build), but I have no qualms pers...

Re: Horsepower required to play H.264 video?

Software - It looks like Firefox 31 (ESR, mind you) is the most recent build of FF and Thunderbird for SPARC. Wow! Things have degenerated a lot for SPARC desktops. Not even the latest ESR? How long will Firefox 31 ESR be supported with security fixes? And the fact most malware is x86/win32 isn't m...

Re: Heater vs Octane

Bah. Try a Quad G5. Why not both? Come winter I'll have my Octane running again, my Sunblade running again, my BOINC cluster running again..... Actually, the LCS for CPU one in my Quad G5 has failed, so it won't be running this winter (this makes me sad. If you know some easy way ot get this workin...

Re: Setting resolution and enabling GPU with VNC

Yup. I've filed so many bug reports on this issue alone it's ridiculous. The few responses I got back from Apple Engineering were all along the line of "we're doing things the way we think they should be done and you're clearly wrong". OS X won't enable a GPU unless it has a monitor plugg...

My quad G5 doesn't seem to use a made up connection - it's a standard C19 connector (okay, that's not common in home computers, but they did it to keep people from using super cheap power cords with that monster of a power hog).

Re: A new classic ThinkPad?

Firefox is going to drop i386 pretty soon also. Fortunately, I maintain my own web browser. PowerPC forever. I don't think I'll get ten years (and counting) out of my i7 MBA. I'm expecting five, tops. I love PPC, don't get me wrong. Actually, I'm a fan of any sort of unusual setup I can put togethe...
