Re: SGI rebranded Challenge S

I couldn't tell you. Looking around though it appears eBay has a ton of them. Wonder if my friend got it off there originally...

Anyways besides being unable to send stuff to it via cu, I can confirm it works fine.

Re: SGI rebranded Challenge S

UPDATE: She's alive, but I'm having issues reaching her over serial. With my Octane as the serial terminal using cu, I have the following setup: Challenge S port 1 - 8-pin-25-pin cable - 25-rj45 null modem adapter - cat 5 cable - rj45-9-pin adapter - Octane2 port 2 I added the following lin...

Re: Wanted: SGI Octane Light Bar modding service

Japes is doing it for me.

And trust me when I say I'm a poor solderer. I am also not wanting to dig my equipment out of storage.

SOLD: Indigo2 R4400 200MHz

Selling this off as I have a proper SGI server now and a low end Indigo2 offers little use in my lineup. Specs ( Also in hinv attached pic ) 200MHz R4400 256MB RAM CD Drive isn't working, but appears to be the drive not the system. Extreme Graphics 72GB HDD ( I used it for file serving, will be wipe...

Sure. She's pretty beat up at the minute though. Let me get her running first.

SGI rebranded Challenge S

Friend of mine sent me a Reynolds and Reynolds Advantage S for free, which is basically a rebranded Challenge S.

First look inside ( Going to get it running tonight hopefully ) it has a Sony PSU, R4600PC @ 133 MHz. Not bad. Has two GIO32 slots like the Indy, AUI only and two serial ports.

Fair enough. Looks interesting but unless they make something powerful out of it I'm probably gonna not get one

Re: Loongson?

Of course not jwp I got that much about performance. Have you used them?

And Calvin, is the system itself GPL? If not I don't see any issues. RMS can eat his junk for all I care

Loongson?

I've been seeing occasional ripples on the GNU/Linux forums about these MIPS based CPUs from China. I've done some looking myself and for the most part I think even my Nexus 7 could wipe the walls with them. They just seem to mostly be embedded and mobile designs with no current workstation designs....

Re: power mac g5

FireWire is a yes.
USB is iffy, depends on the computer, the HDD/enclosure ( Disk drives won't work period ) and whether Walpurgis Night witches are around or killed by Homura.

Spoke with the gent running this ad. Said he will split lots up. I'm close by but I don't have a truck or much money. If you see something you want that can fit in a car I may be able to help.

Re: Actual emacs user in the wild

I'd use ed or pico any day over EMACS. I avoid GPL software when copyfree or proprietary alternatives exist.

Re: power mac g5

You could also check out MorphOS, look at MorphOS.de and see if you device is supported. It has a free evaluation version for download, the only reason I never used it was because I don't like that it is 32-bit only and only runs on secondhand hardware.

I am getting a free challenge S from a local chap so I'll probably keep IRIX on this and use NetBSD on that.

Quiet? That Octane2 is quieter to me and runs cooler too. Glad you got her working. I upgraded Miku here with 2GB and a V8 graphics card someone claimed was a V6 so my lucky day!
