Re: What pointless thing are you doing right now?

My setup is a bit more simple to be honest, no domain - just a simple workgroup. At the moment, the NUC has Ubuntu on it with Server 2008 R2 and Windows 7 VMs set up via VirtualBox. For now it's working quite nicely. It's also worth noting that the Windows Server VM is mainly just intended for Seaml...

Re: Best workstation to start with?

No. O2's are shit. They are the most unreliable piece of crap on the planet. My Westinghouse was more trustworthy and it was bit-sliced, with core. Here we have a case of people who have never owned or run any of this stuff giving advice. Great. O2's are good for looking at but don't touch the thin...

Re: What pointless thing are you doing right now?

I've just finished proving that despite what Microsoft and coincidentally Intel would like you to believe, it's perfectly possible to get Windows 7 running on a Kaby Lake NUC7 with all hardware/drivers working, and with full Windows Updates working as well. Most of it wasn't too hard, but I did have...

Re: your latest purchase

Well, my NUC arrived today, and contrary to what Intel/MS would have you believe, Windows 7 is up and running on it. Still need to do a big driver hunt as there's quite a few drivers missing right now (it's only just booted for the first time after installing), but I was able to find working USB3 an...

Re: your latest purchase

Only problem with abandoning *nix is that the alternatives have been getting worse and worse. Windows 8 was so awful that it finally drove me off my XP system simply by demonstrating that things would never, ever get better there; if I had to use Win10 as a daily driver I'd slit my wrists. And OSX ...

Re: Best workstation to start with?

Here's the problem with owning any old hardware let alone SGI stuff. So you get a machine, you are faced firstly with things not working or things required to use it and the over priced prices ebay sellers on a whole are asking, and secondly, the addiction of upgrading, and the over priced prices e...

Re: Best workstation to start with?

Heh, maybe I have a better experience of O2s as my 200MHz R5000 system was significantly quicker than my earlier 133MHz R4600 Indy that I had before :)

Re: Ebay UK interesting.

That could be a good idea. If that's the case, you could also speak to Ian (mapesdhs here, or http://www.sgidepot.co.uk). His good systems are pricey, but he sells lower spec ones cheaply, and might offer you a deal for a low end system that would be within your budget. He's based in the UK, so ship...

Contact him and ask. Although I imagine the shipping would be expensive if he could do it.

Re: Best workstation to start with?

It was easier ten or fifteen years ago. During that time, I acquired three Indys and two O2s (with keyboards, mice, cams etc) for free as a local University was clearing out their labs. Unfortunately, nowerdays you need to look at buying them. The issue with all models is that the lower spec ones us...

Re: your latest purchase

For me, its mainly for portability. I travel a lot on work, and also when visiting family. Having a laptop keeps me entertained on flights, gives me access to a few games and bits, plus it's useful for Skype calls to family as well. Mine doesn't get used much in the house (Skype aside), but is handy...

Re: your latest purchase

Does anybody actually like modern lenovos, with their touchstrip in place of fn-keys, garbage trackpoint buttons, garbage trackpads, spyware bundled software, garbage keyboards? No. That's why my current laptop is still a heavily upgraded Lenovo X201. 16:10 screen, classic keyboard, trackpad with b...

Re: your latest purchase

If this turns out to be accurate and it's still a 16:9 screen - and a buttonless touchpad as well for that matter (and I'm not seeing any status LEDs either), then I'll be keeping my credit card in my pocket. I do NOT want a crappy, cheapo watching-TV-oriented 16:9 panel on my laptop - period. Apple...

Re: How can Apple reclaim its dominance over PC-based workstations?

I have loved some, but not all of apples products, but sadly to say they are truly becoming purely consumer orientated and that will ultimately be the end of them if they arn't careful. It really does't pay to be a fanboy if it's not in your best interest as a customer, and if they continue to drop...
