Re: NEC SX-ACE

Wow, according to the PDF, it even supports TCP/IP, DNS, and SNMP! You can order the cabinets in different colors too!

Re: Sick and bloody tired of New Linux.

I guess he's starving for attention again. Nah. If I were starving for attention I'd head over to some forum where I had no interest at all, didn't know the first thing about it and didn't want to. Then I'd give lectures that were totally unrelated to reality. What was that about how bad it is that...

Re: Sick and bloody tired of New Linux.

Disappointed to see this, but I'm interested in seeing how they will implement whatever they end up choosing. In any case, the whole change is perhaps a few years down the road, since it would first have to enter unstable, then testing, and finally stable. It takes time, and it will never happen in ...

Re: Fbackup.

This is the only thing I've been able to find is...

http://h30499.www3.hp.com/t5/General/fbackup-restore-without-HP-UX-machine/td-p/4978234

It looks like the basic reply was, "No way to do it without HP-UX, because fbackup uses a proprietary format."

Re: Sick and bloody tired of New Linux.

The new Debian Testing has a very, very fast boot time -- cleaner and faster than the current Stable (which is no slouch). In a VM, it boots from GRUB to login in about 6 seconds. No XML, no binary crap.

Re: Sick and bloody tired of New Linux.

If others are using a Debian-based distribution and want a little script to tie together the software update process, this is the one I always use (I just run it as root whenever I want to update software): apt-full-upgrade . This is not a fully automated update, though. You will still need to monit...

Re: Sick and bloody tired of New Linux.

Slackware, Debian, RHEL, SUSE, etc., are distros that should be reliable, and are meant to be reliable. Reliable distros are by nature very conservative and don't always keep changing the system. When big corporations use Linux, for example, they would never use Gentoo and Arch. Gentoo, Arch, etc., ...

Re: RISComputer 3240

Very cool. Any idea of what the original purpose for this particular machine was, and how long it was in operation? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/R3000 This chip was used very widely, including on the Sony NEWS workstations. The R3000A was even used in the original PlayStation (clocked at 33 MHz).

Re: Sick and bloody tired of New Linux.

Manpages are the traditional standard for Unix documentation, but they don't scale well. Texinfo can handle entire books with chapters, etc., whereas manpages are just manpages. That having been said, I think the info program is clunky and I can never remember the shortcuts. It also divides Unix doc...

Re: Was the age of Unix workstations really golden?

It would be nice if you actually knew something about what you are criticizing. How about trying to build a couple open sores apps for a change ? That might give you some perspective. I did that years ago -- compiling, tracking down dependencies, and finally generating a Slackware package with the ...

Re: Sick and bloody tired of New Linux.

It's not a Linux thread until somebody has answered somebody else's complaint with "RTFM." Next up, "You Don't Need That!" ``This documentation is no longer being maintained and may be inaccurate or incomplete. The Texinfo documentation is now the authoritative source.'' Except ...

Re: Sick and bloody tired of New Linux.

My admonition to consider Slackware has fallen on deaf ears as usual... Did you hear something? I could have sworn I heard somebody speaking, but I must have imagined it... Huh, it must have just been the wind, I guess... Hey guys, remember that really old Linux distro, one of the first...
