why?

Because it was almost 15U in a standard rack and it looked stupid. I didn't think to take a picture of it when we tried, though (Apple did actually sell locking plates for it and I have a set somewhere). It was a very similar idea to what ScutBoy described.

Re: MDD, can OF redirect the console to the serial line?

The MDD does come with a built-in serial port. It's called "the modem."

There are devices like the Griffin iPort which will turn it into a Mac Mini-DIN serial port. Then you just tell OF to talk to that.

Re: rackmount kit for PowerMacG4

You could rack mount an Apple Network Server, too, but I'm here to say from personal experience it wasn't a good idea. :P

Re: What pointless thing are you doing right now?

Nice camera. I prefer to hide mine under eaves and such so they're not noticeable. I usually just radio them back to an Axis video concentrator and then I can view the streams over RTSP.

Re: Good starter machine?

I agree. A Sun Blade would probably be a good choice, not hard to find, but can still do reasonably current stuff in Solaris. I think this would serve you better than a SunOS 4-compatible unit unless you have a strong desire to play with the older SunOS as well (in that case one of the SPARCstations...

Re: rackmount kit for PowerMacG4

Candidly, if you just want a rackmount G4, it might be easier (and even cheaper) to just find an Xserve.

Re: Will MDD/FW-800 CPU work in G4 MDD?

Is noise the real problem here? I've heard of people using quieter fans rather than trying to throttle the existing fans. If you're just trying to reduce noise, why don't you try that?

Re: SATA PCI/PCI-X on non-x86 machines

If you're doing this on a Power Mac, find a Sonnet SATA card. It will "just work" with everything.

I guess you could do something like this in CHUD, but I don't think this is going to work the way you think it will.

Re: Will MDD/FW-800 CPU work in G4 MDD?

If there is such an option, I'm not sure where to find it, but it's probably low-level. Setting boot args would only affect OS X, and I don't think you can set number of running CPUs that way anyhow.

Re: stupid PA-RISC laptop tricks

Tonight's stupid PA-RISC laptop trick was installing Frodo 4.1 and KEGS 0.37 on it. Frodo is fairly conventional, but KEGS was specially optimized in hand-coded assembly language for PA-RISC processors. Let's ask: does it shine? 160MHz PA-RISC laptop, KEGS 0.37: 17MHz emulated CPU, 9.4:1 emulation r...

do some Quake.

Man. I think that would be "seconds per frame" at this resolution, even for the original Quake engine.
