Re: How frequently you use your SGI (in 2017)?

I use USB-Ethernet adapter from, too (actually, I didn't tried to use the WiFi at all). I don't use WiFi either, my home LAN is completely ethernet. I do have a WiFi antenna pointed out my second story window though, by which I can surf the net using any one of my clueless neighbor's WiFi networks....

Re: What's missing? Drivers? Fibre Cards

Not related to the above, but I have been struggling to get a brocade silkworm switch to share a SUN T3 to the Octanes (one would have been a start), and the simplicity of zoning etc and port management from the silkworm interface all seemed very comprehensive and it should have just worked. Anyhoo,...

Re: What's missing? Drivers? Fibre Cards

Well, this was a strange issue, well, still is really. After fitting the shoehorn + FC card into two Octanes and neither picking it up even at the prom level, I fitted it back to the original, where it works fine.. unexplainable! I'm not worrying anyway, I have managed to get all three octanes worki...

Re: Wanted: Octane

Hello I am seeking an Octane machine. The prices on the bay are ridiculous, and there seem to be a few people who have plenty of these machines sitting around. NetBSD does not support the IP30, but does support other machines. I would like to resolve this problem, however I have been unable to loca...

Re: Too many beers? IBM PS/2 Model 70 MCA

Do you need a 5.25" FH 80 MB ESDI HDD? I have a spare that I'll never use. I certainly do, not in any rush though. I'll PM you on that one. Thanks. So what was wrong with the 95XP? There are Pentium 60 complexes floating around at sane prices last I checked (w/ FDIV, too!) PSU - Someone had ta...

What's missing? Drivers? Fibre Cards

Tonight I though I spread the wealth a bit and move a shoehorn with FC card to another Octane, leaving the donor with a dual FC in it's PCi cage. To start with I fitted it to slot C so as to not raise the fans too high. That didn't work very well, FC switch said the port in use was Port_Flt I presum...

Re: How frequently you use your SGI (in 2017)?

Of the three Octanes I have at home, two get used daily (each night when I arrive home, I turn them on, although one has been turned on this morning as I am attempting to get FC linked via a switch). I also have an Indy and an o2 videoing the car park at work, just in case something interesting happ...

It always surprises me, how different cables affect the picture, especially when differing cables look very similar in quality. Worth a shot?

6.5.30 on an indy?

Duh.. I meant 6.5.22.. Heck I just meant 6.5.something.

Re: Which SGI box is your favorite and why?

Octane II - Good power, decent graphics and in a form factor that although heavy, does not take up a huge amount of space and is probably among the less electricity hogging of the lineage. I also like the internal design of the hardware, it's very interesting to take apart. I'd give that a +1. What...

Re: 6.2 / 5.3 packages

You can confirm is not easy? Or if you give me the instruction (source and string) I try to compile myself ;-) i can't confirm either way because i never tried. i keep these archives to the essentials mostly so an emulator wouldn't qualify. My r4400 250mhz have 6.2.... is a good idea upgrade to 6.5...

Sounds like you have been on a mission to get there, but the Octane really is a fine machine. Though like most SGI, very fickle in it's love for you.
