Re: YUM for AIX

Finally. With rpm I had conflicts where X needed Y, so you try and install Y and it says it needs X... So the hell with it, force everything. You should have seen me trying to install ffmpeg. Nothing seems to compile cleanly with gcc either.

Re: the IBM AS/400 machine-interface (MI)

There is a really good book that explains everything called "Inside The AS/400". I've been meaning to pick up a copy. When you see what IBM moved into silicon you'll wonder why we still use the architecture we do.

Re: New Octane, odd issues

Today I took everything apart to do a thorough cleaning (lots of dust) and found the cause :D If you do an ARIN lookup on that IP address from my hinv, it belongs to the Department Of Defense  Guess they were worried about secrets being stolen in the chip. Oh maybe the "number in a can&quo...

Re: New Octane, odd issues

Your NIC is bad. You'll need a new number-in-a-can or a frontplane. As for the irix problem with the wrong graphics board, you'll need to reinstall the graphics subsystem. Wow that was a fast reply :D Just had a thought here. I have a spare O2 riser card with the TO-92 style chip. It would be an in...

New Octane, odd issues

Hello all, I just scored an Octane from eBay. Its a dual 300Mhz and didn't come with any ram so I moved the simms over from my dead Octane and it's alive! I was able to boot with a serial console and clear the prom password. So far so good. When booting with a serial console I'm getting this error n...

I'll see if the powerpc port boots but it looks to be more focused on Mac and Mac clone hardware. I'd love to run *BSD.

Re: openSUSE much better

Hey all, just a quick note. I have to retract my statement about Linux support now. I tried openSUSE and it installed without a hitch and gave me a working system (with an up to date kernel 4.10.1). Don't waste your time with Debian, its installer is buggy and you have to play games trying to get so...

Re: POWER6 Linux and AIX

Shiunbird, you were totally right about the installer being confused. I removed all the drives except for one and it installed cleanly, just like in the VM. Many thanks.

Re: POWER6 Linux and AIX

I run Debian on my Power5. It was a pain to get it booting however. After months trying to sort things out, I found out that the installer was reading the wrong devalias from the OpenFirmware (or the OpenFirmware was sending it wrong to the installer). This at the time of configuring the boot loade...

Re: POWER6 Linux and AIX

You drop the VIOS DVD in and follow the menus. It's an embedded version of AIX 6.1 for the latest version, and the installer will seem familiar to anyone that's installed AIX. On smaller machines you can use an IVM for all the management, no need for an HMC. You will be able to run at least 2 more ...

Re: Powering SCSI media device on Power5

An old ATX power supply should have both these connectors. Fire up the soldering iron :)

Re: Powering SCSI media device on Power5

Can you get at this assembly while its installed? I would just measure the voltages in circuit. Two of those pins are likely connected together as ground so go from there. The drive has the normal PC style power connector so we know its pinout.

Re: Cray XT4

Full of lame PC hardware. You could probably get similar performance today with some 10 core Xeons and cheap Infiniband interconnects. Larger fans tend to be more quiet because they can spin slower and move lots of air. Instead of a high pitched whine you get a pleasant rumble.
