Re: linux on HP rx1600

I basically get no output after "loading initrd....done" but I don't know if it is a kernel hang, or if it is shooting output to the wrong location. It's most likely that the output is going to the wrong place. Off hand I'd say that your bootloader (probably ELILO on an IA64 system) is co...

Re: Octane Network Troubles

it might be a good idea to check the solder joints on the 8-pos modular jack Great tip, thanks SAQ! I don't see anything obviously broken, though. The modular jack is pretty solidly attached to the motherboard, AFAICT. I had an older rev. motherboard that seemed to work, but the machine would crash...

Re: Octane Network Troubles

When you say "dead" you mean you get no link light on your switch or other device? Correct. No lights whatsoever on the switch. If you can ping the IP address of the box from itself then networking sounds like it could be correct. I assume you are trying to ping devices on the same subnet...

Re: Octane Network Troubles

what did you check on the os side? The output of ifconfig showed the IP address that I'd set (and appropriate netmask) and also showed a valid MAC address (matching the one printed on the sticker on the back of the Octane). At the shell prompt I could ping the IP address that I'd set, too. So that ...

Octane Network Troubles

Just before Christmas I picked up an Octane off of eBay for $20 + shipping. It's not too bad: single 300MHz R12000 CPU, 512MB RAM, and SE graphics but what was really nice was that it had the latest 747W power supply, 1.4 XBow, and 030-1467 motherboard. Unfortunately it was absolutely filthy and it'...

Re: FS: Indigo2 parts - cheap, must go or go into the metal

Thanks, Mike! My RAM kits arrived today and everything is functioning nicely. To anybody else: I can highly recommend buying from him if you're in need of Indigo2 parts. (Not that my recommendation will necessarily mean much to anybody.) It was a smooth, no hassle transaction even for shipping to Ca...

Re: Indigo2 R4400 250MHz, 64MB, Solid Impact

Thanks to Mike in this For Sale thread , I've finally been able to upgrade to a reasonable amount of RAM at a reasonable price. I got 2x128MB kits from him and now my Indigo2 totals 320MB. It swaps a lot less (obviously!) and so it now performs surprisingly well as long as you keep in mind that it i...

Re: New to SGI and looking at buying an Onyx2!

Well, I think I lucked out! There's a local seller here on Craigslist who's selling his Octane R12000 300Mhz system with all the extras for only $200! Congratulations! I was considering inquiring about that system myself (even though it would have been a 2-3 hour drive each way to go pick it up). I...

Re: How can I (or you)help? (keeping IRIX/SGI alive and kick

There are basic apps that every user has to use - Mail Client - Web browser - Text editor (no, VI is not a viable alternative. Nor EMACS. I'm saying something for the COMMON MAN) - zip/rar packers/unpackers - File manager (something akind Xtree Pro Gold / Ztree or windows file manager) - Graphics e...

Re: Trade or Sale: Sun D1000, 711 or 611 Drive arrays

I'd be very much interested in the 12-bay 711 enclosures if it weren't for the pesky geography problem. I'm afraid to even think about what it would cost to ship them up here (and get them through customs, etc.). I'm probably not alone in that feeling, either. I'm sure other people are wishing they ...

Re: Anyone have an SGI rack they need to move?

It's more than an hour from Detroit (more like 4 or 5 hours), but there's an SGI rack (which appears to have been part of an Onyx 3800 system) listed on eBay in Mississauga, Ontario (eBay item #260672261175). I know it's a long way to go, but it's straight up highway 401 from the Detroit/Windsor bor...

Re: What's the preferred development environment?

Is there anything that builds on MIPSpro and barfs on GCC? I've found that some open-source projects (especially those that do not use GNU autoconf and automake) tend to assume that "building on IRIX" means "building with MIPSpro". The supplied Makefiles don't handle the IRIX+GC...

Re: Indigo2 R4400 250MHz, 64MB, Solid Impact

There are a couple of empty Octane cases for sale on Ebay these days, if you're looking for a shiny new home for your Octane parts... Yeah, I'm quite familiar with all the temptations eBay currently has to offer. Most of the vendors want nearly $100 to ship the $20 empty Octane case, thou...

Indigo2 R4400 250MHz, 320MB, Solid, Impact Compression

Hello, everyone. I'm a newcomer here. Actually, I'm a long time lurker who has finally decided to come out of the shadows and join into the discussions. I used to be somewhat active in the comp.sys.sgi.* newsgroups 8-10 years ago. My Indigo2 was set aside for a number of years, but I've been playing...
