Re: Total noob. Indigo2 problems

I've seen those same sorts of errors when hard drives have seized and don't spin up at power on. Easiest (although not necessarily cheapest) is to replace it with another 50-pin SCSI hard drive. But those are all old, hence not necessarily reliable. Plus they're hard to find and pricey. It's probabl...

Re: New Spaceball 3003C with drivers etc

Do the included disks have IRIX drivers & software or is it Windows only? It's kind of hard to make out in the pictures, but it looks to me like the CDs and floppy disk all mention Windows. Or are drivers included with IRIX anyway? I've always wanted one of these Spaceballs, but I know absolutel...

Re: Catalog of free and commercial IRIX software.

I think you may have been right about it be it CATIA, but my memory is too hazy to be sure, but it was running on 6.5.xx hardware so either upwards compatible from IRIX 5.x or there was a newer version, that ran on 6.5.xx. Sorry, when I said "version 5.x" I meant of CATIA, not IRIX! My pr...

Re: Catalog of free and commercial IRIX software.

Doing a low level block by block read of a deleted file system on one of the machines I got had evidence of a French (Aerospace ?) CAD/CAE system whose name I forget. Probably CATIA ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CATIA ), originally from Dassault (a French company). I think it ran on IRIX in versio...

Re: How much should I pay for an original IRIX 6.5 CD set?.

But I have a question, is it not legal to buy an original IRIX CD set to install in my O2 ?. I mean, if you buy an original Windows distribution, you have a license inside the package and the license allows you to install it in the computer you choose. Later, if you sell the operating system plus t...

eBay: Octane with Octane Compression

I stumbled upon this auction on eBay (it's not mine): http://cgi.ebay.ca/Silicon-Graphics-CMNB015ANF250-Octane-/360344861474?pt=COMP_EN_Workstations&hash=item53e63a3b22 The photos are badly distorted but as far as I can tell, that Octane has both the Digital Video and Octane Compression cards. I...

Re: HP C8000, PA-8800 1GHz, 4GB, FireGL X1

I have a J6750, and the new HP-UX patching policy is a pain (it's as bad as the new Oracle policy for Solaris...) - just to let you know, Debian runs a dream on PA-RISC hardware thanks to the folks at ESIEE, if you ever need a backup OS. :) It does for now (5.0) but for 6.0 hppa is dropped :( Just ...

Re: HP C8000, PA-8800 1GHz, 4GB, FireGL X1

Are you sure it's an X1? C8000s 'officially' don't support those (or they're missing from the docs), it's usually either T2 or X3. The FireGL X1 is definitely mentioned in some of HP's docs for the C8000: http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/Document.jsp?lang=en&cc=us&taskId=120...

Re: Octane Network Troubles

Did you disassemble it and see if there is a ventilation problem on the XBow? It's behind the part that looks like it should be a speaker, and you do need to pretty much completely disassemble the machine. It's about the only chip on SGIs that is cooled by one of those irritatinly easy to kill sing...

Re: Octane Network Troubles

Well, since the consensus here was that the problem was hardware-related, I went ahead and bought a new motherboard. (I found an eBay auction that also included a dual 250 Mhz CPU module---and I really wanted my Octane to be a dually---and some RAM with a motherboard.) The new (to me) motherboard ca...

Doesn't the MSCSI board provide 4 HVD SCSI channels on a single XIO board?

Re: Portable serial console?

What would be nice would be a "BIOS replacement firmware" for one of the laptops that had a serial port (probably P2/P3 era) that would just be the terminal program. Lots of work and in the end it would be model-specific, though. The coreboot project ( http://www.coreboot.org/ ) might be ...

Re: Crimson, Octanes, Sunfire v880, Assorted other vintage g

1 x Sun Microsystems Sunfire V880z, 3 x UltraSPARC III CPU's You might want to double check the number of CPUs. AFAIK, the V880 systems used CPU boards with 2 CPUs each so 3 CPUs wouldn't be possible. 3 boards with 2 CPUs each would be a more likely configuration, for a total of 6 CPUs. (Which was ...

Re: linux on HP rx1600

I basically get no output after "loading initrd....done" but I don't know if it is a kernel hang, or if it is shooting output to the wrong location. It's most likely that the output is going to the wrong place. Off hand I'd say that your bootloader (probably ELILO on an IA64 system) is co...

Re: Octane Network Troubles

it might be a good idea to check the solder joints on the 8-pos modular jack Great tip, thanks SAQ! I don't see anything obviously broken, though. The modular jack is pretty solidly attached to the motherboard, AFAICT. I had an older rev. motherboard that seemed to work, but the machine would crash...
