Re: Transputers

Going fast in a straight line is okay. Going fast as you can and still making that turn at less than half that speed - that's exciting! Where I live, we connect towns and cities by carving roads where the mountains graciously let us get away with it. Any of the various twisty canyons around here ar...

Re: Transputers

driving fast, like over 140mph is pretty exciting, but there's not often a chance to do that lately. That's because you live back East. No open roads in the middle of nowhere with no cops. You'd love the Silver State Classic Challenge. A stretch of highway closed off in Nevada each year for the sol...

Yeah. Gave it away when you're already loaded (relatively speaking). Lucky indeed, Saint Bono.

Re: Why didn't Doc Brown just distill the booze?

They attempted straight whiskey first, probably thinking "what could possibly go wrong?" And, if it simply did not work, they probably would have attempted one of the aforementioned ideas. The problem: they blew out the fuel injection manifold, and Doc guesstimated that it would take a mo...

...and the ugliest. ... which would matter if it were next to your desk. Who would be that insane? *everyone points at DNA* Hey shutup. I've only got one rack next to me. All: "And it's an AMD64 rack, DNA." I don't care if I'm running at 300MHz, wanking out 1.2GFLOPs while cool-to-hate $3...

Jesus biscuits. FB-DIMMs even.

I wonder how that would compare to my Opteron cluster and the smaller version I'm working on?

Why didn't Doc Brown just distill the booze?

In BTtF3, Doc and Marty burn out the DeLorean by trying to run it on whiskey. Doc was smart and any redneck can make moonshine. Why not further distill the whiskey into pure (more or less) ethanol and burn that? It would have worked, though the seals on the fuel lines would need replacing in a few y...

Re: where to find powersupply for iMac G5

A heat gun to preheat the evil ground and power planes in these boards is pretty much crucial. You're usually good below 700F for as long as it takes to bring the source side of the board up to temp since most through-hole parts like caps are wave-soldered. If there are hand-soldered through-hole pa...

Re: 8-bit cutting boards...

If you did it like those cut-piece candies with the design in them, it could be cost-effective at both sides. Make a big block with like a dozen of the same design and cut them apart with a big bandsaw or something.

Re: Defective V12

You have to ramp up to the temp where the solder melts over the course of a few minutes to keep the board from warping. I know how to do that on a Teradyne Summit, but I haven't a clue how to make a kitchen oven do the same thing.

Re: Defective V12

That is definitely analog. It looks like a TV with the saturation cranked. Passive component with a bad solder joint or maybe a cracked solder ball on a BGA. Hot air reflow would likely fix it.
