After Jeb if there are any of the node boards left I'd be up for 2 as well.

Re: How can Apple reclaim its dominance over PC-based workstations?

For me personally I feel like the innovations and uniqueness of Apple's laptop/desktop products ended with the Power Mac G5 Tower. I do have to give them credit for helping to force the removal of cheap plastics from HP/Dell/etc. in their higher end laptops in favor of a nice chassis/keyboard/etc. N...

Re: Are we a dying breed?

Figured I'd chime in on this since I have been on here off and on for 12 years. I started down the SGI path back in 2004 when I got a Reputable Systems Octane, found this forum a little later in 2005. Then life stuff hit, moved out of the house (became super poor as a result), did eventually get a V...

Re: Jim Clark interview (Aug 2017)

His recollection of that time (and even pre-SGI) was impectable - I hope when I'm that age I still can remember everything that well.

Thanks for passing that on - was a nice way to start the holiday.

I'll second that - I got one thinking it would be comparable to ARM offerings, but was largely disappointed.

Re: 15th Birthday of the SGI Fuel

As others have said, it seemed like by the time the Fuel was shipped SGI had already decided to end IRIX/MIPS in favor of Linux/IA-64. Fuel was more of a stop gap imo. They could have really made a successor to the Octane with it and given it an upgraded VPro and Dual CPUs to coincide with the upgra...

Re: your latest purchase

and am now remembering how much I enjoyed NT4 back in the day. :? It may be just nostalgia because during my NT4 days (96-00) it was probably the biggest kickstart into programming (VB, C++, Perl), 3d animation/modeling (TrueSpace, 3ds max) and 2d graphics (Photoshop) a kid could have had. Laid the...

Re: your latest purchase

While not my latest purchase, my most recent restoration (kinda counts?): Silicon Graphics 320 Visual Workstation (Dual P II/768mb configuration) The hard drive was dying and without the specific NT4 disk (all the links to the sgi_ssk.exe are dead from what I've found) I couldn't simply reinstall to...

Re: Cobalt Thread

I run my Qube2 every now and then with NetBSD - a fun quiet box.

Went a little crazy last year and got every RaQ model to complete that collection from the first model to the 550.

Re: Cool (open source) software you would like to see ported...

Before diving into compiling it locally - anyone have git running on their machines? Tried the latest and 2 versions back from nekoware on my Tezro and am getting "Cannot Successfully map soname 'liblber-2.3.so.1'" errors when cloning.

If you can be patient - they do pop up on eBay for about $100. RM11's are the more rare find for reasonable money.

Re: Bought a mint condition o2.

Looks great - congrats. Same situation for me too - heard about Silicon Graphics machines from my dad who got to use them in their heyday. Finally got an Octane 11 years ago - so I can relate on the excitement to finally own one. More ram, a U320 drive and a faster cpu will do wonders for an O2. I h...
