Re: trying to solve a unresolvable symbol when running Mirai

well i'll be darned! that worked! How did you come to the idea to set the date to 99? mirai.jpg so you never tried my tip from page 1 - written in may of 2014 - to set the system date back a number of years? i thought i had sufficiently hinted that that made mirai work again. ;) as i recall the cul...

Re: SGI branded Tag Heuer watches on craigslist

i think they were still doing not too shabbily in 1995. anyway they compensated by putting a proper lightbulb into their next workstation. now that's some nice retro touch right there!

Re: SGI branded Tag Heuer watches on craigslist

battery though... who wants expensive quartz watches? up-market it's kinetic (or manual) all the way, did nobody ever tell them. :)
their choice of style seems a strange fit for a tech company too with the gold and all.

Re: Octane Digital Video + Vpro

also, as I recall my octane compression video board did run in an octane 2 (did not require internal cabling) but turned out to be incompatible hardware and/or driver-wise with the Vpro and caused reproducable kernel panics. probably safe to say that none of the 'old' video options will work in such...

Re: Customized O2

I never went to see that Craigslist group of 02s octanes and a fuel. I have some friends that work at ILM and I might drop by there sometime later this year. I've always wondered, just like my time at Digital Domain, if they have a whole area filled with old SGI computers getting dusty. You know th...

Re: Smartphones

mine is the sony xperia z ultra, must be one of the biggest smartphones ever made, almost a small tablet. i needed a new phone, balked at the cost of the usual suspects and this one won the price/performance competition by a landmile since retailers wanted to get rid of the stock. a few years old no...

Re: Current state of Alias Composer and Studiopaint (3D)

I assume this is quantity of bits per one color channel(?). What advantage to designer give these 12 bits over 8? Or this is internal architectural extra bits that remove rounding errors and then in any case results output to monitor in 8 bit per color channel?? Does MGRAS (and VPro of course) exac...

Re: Current state of Alias Composer and Studiopaint (3D)

It seems you're right and Studiotools only had 2D part of Studiopaint... By the way - Studiopaint as standalone application on IRIX always included 3D part? i think the paint module in alias is really an entirely different program. i remember seeing it in some alias training videos and it did not a...

Re: Current state of Alias Composer and Studiopaint (3D)

as far as i know studiopaint 3d as in the 2D/3D paint/texturing hybrid with hardware brushes was not ported but abandoned in 2000. instead a new module that perhaps shares the name was developed as part of alias studio on other platforms than irix. but i believe that is strictly 2D and a concepting ...

Re: Vector icons

if only they had gone and provided a decent icon editor or a way to convert data from illustrator & co. iconsmith was not a pleasant experience, neither was the whole process of setting up icons. so i just stuck with defaults mostly. i also don't remember many fancy icons on irix, a lot of third...

Re: Tezro sold for under $600

it's been a while i ran an octane but the dual-v12 would seem like fastfan-fun all the time? i've only enabled that setting once to check it out and - my god! . impossible to work with the machine in the same room.

Re: Wacom Intuos GD

this is the 0912 btw. they kept this form factor up to and including the intuos3 before going all wide screen: https://tablet4u.co.uk/image/131.1040.757.800/intuos-a4-usb-tablet-1.jpg 1212 is a lot deeper, obviously. no way to place the keyboard behind that and use comfortably.

Re: Wacom Intuos GD

then you must have rather small desk space available if the 0912 is considered massive. i used to run this in front of keyboard and 21-inch CRT's on regular straight desks. then later with TFTs this form factor was a breeze to use. btw. the power switch on the 1212 is - as far as i remember - option...

Re: Wacom Intuos GD

sounds like you got the A4 oversize version GD-1212-R? it's thick, has a slope to it and a dedicated power switch somewhere up in the corner. also the pen stand can be clipped to the back of the unit. the regular A4 model is called GD-0912-R, is as flat as current models - about a third of the overs...
