Re: Octane video setup (not mine)

floppy drive! indeed. :) interesting - whatever they may have used that for. is that perhaps for fetching data off some old camera? i recall some had builtin floppy drives. and yes you can run a ghetto setup. a whole bunch of drives, the enclosure, proprietary disk sleds and whatever-shielded cables...

Re: Octane video setup (not mine)

just curious what kind of drive is installed in the middle bay - is that a Jaz or Zip? https://i.ebayimg.com/images/g/IYcAAOSwmwtaQ~MQ/s-l1600.jpg without the disk array the smoke install is probably useless - these drives should be pretty hard to come by nowadays. besides, you can run this software...

Re: Octane 1.5 + Irix 6.5.26 + Wacom (sharing a great feed back)

intuos mice (pucks) are some of the most useless things ever, no loss there. they only work on the tablet surface itself, the ergonomics are shocking and the feel of pushing them around is not exactly like a mouse. they have a sort of carpet stuck to their underside, not very smooth. i have intuos m...

Re: TEZRO WANTED please

if it's only intended as a collector's item wouldn't it make sense to go for something compact like an o2(+) instead? that can be put on a book shelf even. tezro ... well, you'll have to throw all the books away to make it fit. :p besides, i'd expect the big chunky cases to scratch and break quite e...

Re: Imwheel for Irix- ported! download link in thread

just stumbled upon this post. i've found the imwheel build in my backups: http://s000.tinyupload.com/index.php?file_id=06035193102806836134 the archive was created on a mac - you might have to mess with permissions for the executable. hope it still works! check the readme and the imwheelrc for how t...

Re: Which SGI box is your favorite and why?

I ended up inheriting your noisy machine! SGI really didn't consider noise when they created their masterpieces! (Especially the long term effect it has on your ears!) rest assured it isn't even a particularly noisy one. my backup dual-400 V8 i had at the time put out the same kind of noi...

Re: Which SGI box is your favorite and why?

in terms of first impressions it's bound to be the purple indigo2. i used one back in uni: a top of the line R10k maximpact with more memory installed than our entire student PC pool at the time (still had softimage bail on me due to insufficient RAM though ;) ) and it had a neat video-IO board, too...

Re: I like workstations dedicated to only one purpose ...

Space for expansions? Not really. Built to run one dedicated application set. i'd interpret it like this: configured to run one dedicated application set by taking advantage of the options for expansion that the multi-purpose (or can we call it ... generic? ) workstation offers. btw. what...

Re: Some advices/help to uninstall properly Alias|Wavefront software

looks correct to me. if i recall right: by unfolding the 'product' entries by clicking the arrow icon next to them you can see the paths for every single file that was installed. if nothing conflicts with the maya install location then you should be good to go. perhaps back up the license file befor...

Re: SGI IRIX and computer graphics currently? What that should i use ?

You mean the ones that said A) and B gave up? i recall mostly they did or simply vanished, never to be seen again. a few might have bought the hardware and then probably drew the obvious conclusion: that it's a hopelessly outdated platform, neat to indulge in an interest into retro computing, not a...

Re: SGI IRIX and computer graphics currently? What that should i use ?

like i thought - no SGI experience at all. we've had our share of forum newcomers over the years who fit that bill and were initially convinced that the machines were still competitive ... because a) used in the movies and b) 'hardware acceleration'. combined with the case design this always seems t...

RobhG: just wondering if you have any experience with SGI machines at all? have you had the chance to use one in recent years?

Re: Garbage

i googled this the other day and if you look for the subject 'hairline fractures' or 'self cracking' in conjunction with the Xperia series, the topic still seems to come up. i don't know anyone besides me with a sony but i see a lot of shattered displays around which still seem to work. common feedb...

Re: The Problem with Apple

But your argument is invalidated because a base OS is relatively useless by itself. huh? it's a part one tends to end up interacting with a lot and that glues things together. anyway, i'm not even sure we were talking about the same thing. or even having a discussion. I don't recall seeing an...

Re: The Problem with Apple

actually, one of the reasons given for gluing it all together vs going with screws and clips is to increase stiffness as the machines get thinner. re: GUI not talking about thirdparty apps, just what's coming with the OS (filemanager, desktop, prefs, et al) or in the case of linux the desktop enviro...
