Re: Video acceleration on Power Macs / QuickTime / FCP

"AMD Graphics" there's your reason for the fan noise. :) mine is intel iGPU only. i also have an MBP with both intel and AMD GPU. when i disable the AMD GPU the computer stays perfectly quiet unless i really push it (i lose my video-out though). else when the AMD is active even running a y...

Re: Video acceleration on Power Macs / QuickTime / FCP

I tried using my Mac Mini for editing, but: 1. When it's idle, it's great. But when the fans are blowing, it's far more annoying than the G5. Whiny high pitched fan. 2. I don't necessarily like Final Cut X (or didn't take the time to learn it properly). i on the other hand can't seem to make a 2012...

Re: SoftImage 3D 4.0 Install Help ?

You are right, but ILM even said that SoftImage 3D 4.0 2002 in linux, even better than SGI Irix or Windows hey Rob, i think that's just marketing speak for a joint press release. ;) it is well known that ILM moved to linux around 2002, that they got a lot of deals for gear (all those o2's for examp...

Re: SoftImage 3D 4.0 Install Help ?

... SoftImage 3D 4.0 ... does everything a current CGI software does ... hardly :) but if all you want to do is already in there and you're not trying to use or learn anything relevant today in the job - why not. have fun. soft 3d was an irix app that received a bunch of ports as a result of a buyo...

Re: Octane2 .. hasn't run for ... quite a while..

what would happen if i just replace the video card with the v8 i have? will it default to something? or will it just be a no go? . as far as i remember - if the box had another vpro card set up up in irix before then it's good to go. if however the setup so far was configured to work with one of th...

Re: Octane2 .. hasn't run for ... quite a while..

using compressed air on those connectors - wasn't that the big no-no with the Octane? however i would agree with pulling out the boards and power supply and making sure RAM and the boards themselves are reasonably clean and seated properly before turning on the box. if you happen to have one of thos...

Re: Final Fantasy Movie SGI, Maya, and Renderman.

i have the making-of book for that one. lots of footage. there's a picture of some animator sitting at his desk with an octane placed next to the monitor. remembering the noise that box makes i couldn't help but feel sorry for the poor chap. ;) they seem to have used mostly eizo CRT's instead of the...

Re: An item is only ever worth what someone is willing to pay... :)

well it baffled me for sure because - - it appears that - going by comments on youtube under the relevant videos - it is not a super rare unicorn one-of-a-kind for the collectors - it's a prototype for a low-end machine from back then - no fancy hardware, no particularly interesting design. i take i...

Re: An item is only ever worth what someone is willing to pay... :)

that C65 final bid is insane. at first i was under the impression that it's truly an ultra rare machine but then you go on youtube and see that there are several users around there already, demoing those things. sounds like a few hundred of these machines were made. i wonder what kind of money conso...

Re: How can Apple reclaim its dominance over PC-based workstations?

stumbled into this cute little site: http://hp.com/go/mac-to-z i think at this point it's all about the mac environment though. if there's no preference in using that (e.g. build of editing app running better on mac) then might as well go with windows. is there a way to keep windows 10 definitely a...

Re: How can Apple reclaim its dominance over PC-based workstations?

re: business model - looks like on the mac pro you can upgrade RAM, CPU and storage although there's only a small selection of CPU models for the board/chipset (no different from intel PC then, really) and they went non-standard with the SSD (can you do something with an adapter there by any chance?...

Re: How can Apple reclaim its dominance over PC-based workstations?

my 27 inch Cinema Display gets rather hot on it's own! really, is that an older type of screen then - or some high density resolution? cause i have here a 27 inch eizo (@1440p) which is a 2014 model and that stays remarkably cool even after prolonged use. unlike my older TFTs from 2008 or so which ...

Re: How can Apple reclaim its dominance over PC-based workstations?

No upgrade parts were offered because it wasn't standard - the best you could hope for is to upgrade your D300 to a D700 from another mac pro. yeah i know it isn't just an AMD board of the time in a custom form factor but did they never sell their cards separately either if they are as easily repla...
