Re: How can Apple reclaim its dominance over PC-based workstations?

stumbled into this cute little site: http://hp.com/go/mac-to-z i think at this point it's all about the mac environment though. if there's no preference in using that (e.g. build of editing app running better on mac) then might as well go with windows. is there a way to keep windows 10 definitely a...

Re: How can Apple reclaim its dominance over PC-based workstations?

re: business model - looks like on the mac pro you can upgrade RAM, CPU and storage although there's only a small selection of CPU models for the board/chipset (no different from intel PC then, really) and they went non-standard with the SSD (can you do something with an adapter there by any chance?...

Re: How can Apple reclaim its dominance over PC-based workstations?

my 27 inch Cinema Display gets rather hot on it's own! really, is that an older type of screen then - or some high density resolution? cause i have here a 27 inch eizo (@1440p) which is a 2014 model and that stays remarkably cool even after prolonged use. unlike my older TFTs from 2008 or so which ...

Re: How can Apple reclaim its dominance over PC-based workstations?

No upgrade parts were offered because it wasn't standard - the best you could hope for is to upgrade your D300 to a D700 from another mac pro. yeah i know it isn't just an AMD board of the time in a custom form factor but did they never sell their cards separately either if they are as easily repla...

Re: How can Apple reclaim its dominance over PC-based workstations?

The GPU models in this machine are easily replaceable, as they simply connect to the "bottom plane" of the machine that's a pretty sad state of affairs then that they never came around with an update. as i recall even at release in 2013 the generation of AMD chips they chose was not the t...

Re: How can Apple reclaim its dominance over PC-based workstations?

The argument is: how can you produce a machine that outperformes the competition, when you're using the same hardware as the competition?! i think that'll be near impossible anyway unless your design is radically different and vastly superior at the same time since the bottleneck will always be dev...

Re: How can Apple reclaim its dominance over PC-based workstations?

oh i don't mind the trashcan as such at all but it's not a real workstation design just a nice compact computer. i think they don't even let you swap in a bog standard SSD and it's a single drive slot at that? they also went with non-swappable AMD GPUs when the industry at the time was already settl...

Re: How can Apple reclaim its dominance over PC-based workstations?

i wouldn't want them to switch back from intel. :) i'm not a HPC or audio- or even video-guy but in my field (3D) it has always been intel, intel aaaaand intel. well, in the post-mips era, anyway. ;) in the environment i work in, the only PPC-macs in the facility traditionally have been in the audio...

Re: Mac Pro 2013

It's definitely your box then! I'm extremely happy to have it in my collection! :D Just so that you know, it's extremely well looked after, so it should keep on going as long as I'm alive as I won't sell it. BTW, it's great to see that you're also into fine time pieces! :D great to hear that it sti...

Re: How to measure time?

Oskar, it's still possible to score the original IWC Porsche Design, they are not that rare. the design had more class than most of what PD comes up with these days. :D it's way too small for me though. around 44mm needed here. my IWC desirables are the recently phased-out ingenieur and current aqua...

Re: Mac Pro 2013

yeah if you got yours from frankfurt in '14 and it came with a PCI cage with dual-scsi and a hacked 3com then it must be my former one. always been a very reliable box. if that checks out i am glad to hear it's still kicking! :)

Re: Mac Pro 2013

Irinikus: off topic - from what you posted elsewhere on this forum it appears your octane 2 is a green new logo model. just wondering where you got it from? i sold a green dual-600 like that to cape town a few years back, hence the question. :)

Re: Mac Pro 2013

if the eGPU stuff works with any mac with the appropriate ports then it may be actually be quite interesting for professional users of the trashcan. those dual AMD chips were never really all that fast as far as i know but connect an nvidia 1080 or titan and it should extend the machine's useful lif...

Re: How to measure time?

oh, wristwatches, nice. my daily drivers are the Tutima DI300 and Sinn 142, both titanium watches. i had a bit of a heureka moment regarding that material years back and can not wear steel anymore. :) restricts one's choices quite a bit. still, i have a Tudor Pelagos incoming and there are plans for...

Re: Mac Pro 2013

i specced out the current MBP models but it's not that much faster considering all the time that has passed since i picked up my late 2011 model and i agree that the keyboards of the touch-strip models are painful and the connectivity is a joke. so i'll invest in a makeover of my current machine's i...
