Re: 180Mhz O2: reason for slow internet browsing

This has been covered at length here many times. The main reason is javascript and Firefox (plus the other associated libraries) are not optimized for IRIX or the hardware. Though your 180Mhz R5000 is not helping much either ;) Run a search on the forums for "firefox performance". hehe th...

Re: SGI Magazine Ads

Interesting. However I think you're a bit late in your suggestion of when scientific computing became "the thing". 7 or 8 years before that SGI were already one of the largest (by seat numbers) CAD workstation providers (courtesy of Indy, the success they couldn't follow), and a major forc...

Re: FS: Possibly for group buy

Hi Richard Thanks for the email. I'll speak with my friend over there (I'm in the UK, so can't obviously deal with this - even if I got a container load sent over here, can you imagine the customs paperwork?! and at potentially as much as $7,000 for the shipping, it doesn't really seem worth it!) an...

Re: FS: Possibly for group buy

I haven't been around in a while. Although I'm in the UK, if this lot is still available then I'll speak to a friend of mine state-side. The logistics would be this: Book a shipping container to go to the OP's house, have somebody attend to pack it all up, have the container shipped to my friend's h...

Re: Fuel: is my VPro V10 broken?

The pandora error suggests that the GFX_PIXEL process has hung and, therefore, failed. This is (no surprise) a graphics test. If the system can't properly initialise the V10 then it is likely that a software process attempting graphics operations will fail (as it has done). In this case, it doesn't ...

Video as Texture Software for O2

Hi, as per title, what commercial (or, indeed, non-commercial) software made practical use of the O2's video-as-texture capabilities? There are obviously some SGI demos, and I'm sure developers made use of it for specific (client-specific) applications, but what else was out there? In particular, we...

Re: ORIGIN 400

Ah-hem, thank you for that. Contrary to what you may think, I've spent many decades using my eyes, ears, and brain to examine the world and form my own opinions. Those opinions may not match yours, but that is the way of the world, and it would be a pretty dull place if we all agreed on everything....

Re: ORIGIN 400

So, in the context of a market economy, we do, in fact, need the rich in order to provide (some of the) jobs for the poor! Sorry but you do not understand a "market economy" in the slightest. The wealthy do not do shit to advance an economy. They are pretty much parasites. There will alwa...

Re: ORIGIN 400

Why would someone bother licensing? Didn't Intel run off with "Extreme Graphics" and "vPro" for free? Little bullies have to pay. Bigger bullies get the free ride. You know, "We need rich people to give jobs to the poor people." Not wishing to entirely derail the topic...

Wish list - UK

The great merry-go-round of SGI equipment in the UK seems to have dried to a trickle; very little if anything on eBay, nothing of note on here. Ian can't possibly have bought it all, can he? Just in case anybody from the UK is watching and has things to offer, here's a short list of items I'm lookin...

Re: What led to The Fall of SGI? - From www.vizworld.com

A big computer that brings in video from multiple sources.. Those sources can be anything, camera feeds, screens of other computers, webcams, live simulations etc. Then, on a single bigass screen, you see all those video sources in little boxes that you can manipulate. You can take an incoming stre...

Re: What led to The Fall of SGI? - From www.vizworld.com

once again (retroactively) Mashey takes forever to grind out the obvious. Q: Given my comments above, why can't you buy SGI's running NT? A: Because *no one* could figure out how *SGI* can actually make money doing so. I hope it is obvious that serious people thought pretty hard about it... This is...

Re: What led to The Fall of SGI? - From www.vizworld.com

At the end of the day - IMHO of course - the Indy killed SGI. Prior to the Indy, SGI were an enormous (in $ terms) and almost mythical company which produced machines which did magical things far and away removed from everyday computing hum-drum. Could be said about (almost) the entire ESD. Indigo ...
