Re: Newbee needs help with error message...

Don't mean to be a total buzzkiller - but you may want to reconsider your idea of using this machine for any type of 3D experiments. This Indy's hardware configuration is particularly low-end and wont give you much joy with regard to 3D. However, once you get it up and running (replace disk + IRIX r...

Re: Cool (open source) software you would like to see ported...

I like to see Blender back on Irix Not exactly a recent version, but stumbled across Blender 2.27 'tuhopuu' the other month on a ye olde disck. Its got my source mods for IRIX Quicktime MJPEG export. So, practically, Blender has never really been 'absent' on IRIX. Blender just moved on with the tim...

Re: SGI IRIX and computer graphics currently? What that should i use ?

No amount of asking questions and hoping for the best can replace actual time spent doing work. Stop asking questions, get to work already. That 'current CGI' stuff you keep talking about wont model, texture, rig and render itself.

I suggest everybody ignore you till you start posting WIP shots :)

Holiday season hardware upgrades

Hey All, Frankenputer has seen some minor hardware upgrades this week. After having its old Pentium D 915 @2.8Ghz replaced with a XEON X3220 @2.4Ghz a few months ago, yesterday it received a shiny new passively-cooled-thus-silent Nvidia GT1030 to replace the old noisy GT9500. Also, the full-height D...

Re: SGI IRIX and computer graphics currently? What that should i use ?

So using SGI for current CGI is highly recommended or just another option for business work? No, using SGI for current CGI is NOT highly recommended, SGI is also NOT just another option for business work. They are lovely niche machines from an era long gone. If you are nostalgic for that era or jus...

Re: SGI IRIX and computer graphics currently? What that should i use ?

Fair enough - you seem set on trying your luck with SGI gear. Here's what I suggest you look for in a desktop. Though others may want to pitch in wrt. deskside Onyx-en. System 1: Octane 2 - 2x400Mhz CPU (2x600Mhz if you can find it) - 4Gb RAM (8Gb if you can find it) - V12 graphics System 2: Tezro -...

In my not so humble opinion, don't bother with a SGI box for current commercial 3D work. Yes, you can do work, yes, your work might be fabulous, yes, you might even be able to get the work into portfolio viewings. But, you're going to be out on your own. There's no community round these old applicat...

Re: How can we encourage better group participation on this site?

Have you guys ever considered a facebook page for SGI computers? the HUGE (did i stress that enough? :P ) plus of independent sites is that you're in control, not bacefook or whoever else. also the search capabilities are so much better and you can have the forum/site do whatever you want. I kind o...

Re: A snapshot of what you've got.

@josehill - actually I had been using bluebox more and more before its fan replacement surgery. Basically the Fuel is a bit of a white elephant. These days it's too slow for any real work, it lacks the charm of the older SGI machines, and yes, it's loud. While it's true that the O2 is older and much...

dmrecord.dmic - added screen port JPEG quality option

Hey All,

I modified dmrecord.dmic from /usr/share/src/dmedia to accept a [,quality=Q] option if you specify capture to be from the screen port. Tested on bluebox and with Q=90 it produces significantly cleaner footage (duh).

Hope somebody finds this useful.

Re: A snapshot of what you've got.

redbox and bluebox . redbox_bluebox.jpeg redbox isn't seeing much action these days, but bluebox has just had its PSU fan replaced and is now whisper quiet. It's getting daily use. Behind bluebox, there's a pile of O2 parts and my spare 600Mhz Fuel which donated its working PSU to redbox a while ba...
