Re: your latest purchase

13 UKP on ebay.co.uk got me a XEON X3220 @2.40 Ghz to replace the Pentium G915 @2.80 Ghz in the PeeCee I threw together from old parts I had strewn about the house. My primitive benchmarking seem to suggest it's now 4-5x faster on compute bound tasks.

Nice :)

Re: Having trouble understanding the man page for VkSubProcess

I've done some more reading. It seems that in wanting/needing to spawn an external program and then wanting to communicate with it, I'm running into a very old Xlib/Xt problem rooted in the event-driven nature of X11. As I understand it now, X11 applications deal with 'window system' events by runni...

Re: Having trouble understanding the man page for VkSubProcess

Thanks guys for taking a look at this - I'm away from the IRIX boxen for a few days, but will continue my efforts when I get back.

Having trouble understanding the man page for VkSubProcess

Hey All, Feeling a little stupid - maybe some kind soul can help out. I'm trying to spawn an external process like 'tar' from a Motif GUI whilst getting ongoing updates from the spawned process. Messing around with sgitcl has got me some ok-ish results. However, the tclMotif UI locks-up as it waits ...

Oops - I'm an idiot. Google 'xvidcap' instead of 'xvidgrab' - sorry :(

Re: Desktop video capture on O2?

The ICE video in the O2 is from the era of ANALOGUE 2-fields SD video. So, the reason for the no-workey-when-you-deviate isn't because you deviated per se, but because you're trying to capture a larger than analogue video frame size. Sizes SMALLER than the max PAL size will capture just fine as long...

Looking for SGI products Propel and Provision

Have never come across these products in the wild. These products were written in sgitcl, or rather according to an old USENET post by one of the engineers who worked on these products, sgitcl was developed to build those products. Then came the web and HTML and all that and any SGI software tooling...

Re: Desktop video capture on O2?

Tried it out with the O2 like so: nedit -geometry 80x25+210+232 & dmrecord -p screen,x=200,y=200,width=768,height=432,timing=ntsc screencast-00.mov which opens up an Nedit window to type in and sets up dmconvert to start recording. Notes: - The Nedit window is 16:9 aspect ratio. - 768x432 is the...

Re: Desktop video capture on O2?

I've never had much success recording video with 'mediarecorder' on my O2's. The CLI tool 'dmrecord' on the other hand has been great. man dmrecord will give you all the info you need to record video from screen to disk with your O2. I also suggest you juggle the RAM in your O2's to have as much of ...

Re: AV1+O2Cam and YouTube

And here it is:

https://github.com/tokland/youtube-upload

Needs Python and I haven't tested it because I'm not near the O2.

AV1+O2Cam and YouTube

Hey All, I was sorting through my pile of O2 hardware the other day and wondered if unmodified MJPEG-compressed footage from the AV1+O2Cam was directly uploadable to YouTube. Short answer: Yes, it is. Longer answer: - I used dmrecord rather than mediarecorder because it does less 'thinking' after re...

Baked scones for breakfast. Though on 2nd and 3rd thoughts, that's probably not an entirely pointless thing to have done :)

Re: Firefox3 rebuild

I had a looksey at the Firefox Release Notes for 3.5.x and 3.6.x and it seems to me that having an improved js engine and webfonts would be nice. I'm not sure sure if much of the ogg/theora html 5 stuff will be relevant to our slow machines though. Firefox version 4 and up seem a build too far, rega...
