What I did

I forgot the root password for my Octane2 recently. I took the Octane2's disk out and put it in a Linux machine (a HP PA-RISC B2000). I was able to read the scsi disk, but could not mount the xfs partitions (I think that IRIX is able to use block sizes that the Linux implementation of xfs doesn't li...

Q3irix

Now that Quake3 is opensourced:

Perhaps we can get to work fixing some of the bugs and optomising it a bit for ODYSSEY graphics and MIPS.

YEP..It was the adaptor

The 13w3 to HD15 adaptor I used aparently is a sun one or something and doesn't work with the octane (even though the ebay seller claimed sgi compatability). Everything works fine now with a new adaptor.

nuttin

I still can't get it...no matter what I type into the normal shell or console (who knows if I am really inputting anything....I'm doing it "blind", of course, with no video output). I'll hit escape a bunch of times, then type "setenv console g" or "resetenv" then "init", hit enter, reboot, and still...

PROM console?

Well....First of all, how would I get to the PROM console? I was able to get to it before (when my RAM was bad), but now It just seam to always boot to IRIX. If I do "init 0" I seam to loose my connection to the serial console. I already tried "nvram console g" (and then rebooting) from the normal r...

octane2 graphics console

I just got an octane2 off ebay. When I got it, it would not boot, so I checked the hard disk out on an hp machine to verify that IRIX it was present (it was). I then put it back in the octane and rebooted it, this time with a serial console attached. The serial console output indicated that the diag...

slightly older but still good system

I can get you a sun with quad 400mhz UltraSparcIIs, quad redundant power supplies (200 watts per module; system runs fine with only one module in, but I generally keep them all hooked up), 2 gigs ram, and a fresh install of Solaris 10 with the gnu additions if you want (gcc, vim, bash, etc). Rails f...

Seti

I'm not sure if this has been posted before (I haven't read nekochan perfectly regularly). Sory if its a dupe. I just wanted to point out that the top computer by far in the new Seti project (BOINC) is a sgi box. http://setiweb.ssl.berkeley.edu/top_hosts.php Of course the superior floating point eff...

This is definitly awesome technology. Congrats to SGI, their users and supporters, employees and investors. I wonder if SGI made a decent profit on it (its a government project, one would think they could get the corporate welfare thing goin)...then again, they might have chosen to sell it cheap or ...

other vendors

Since they are local (chicago area), I've leaned twards sgisun. Call the number, the prices they list online are outdated. They give good deals on trade ins and will match most reputable systems prices.
