Vintage Computer Festival East - March 31-April 2, 2017

Long time nekochan.net user, but long out of practice... Sorry for the late notice, but it may interest anyone in the northeast US that VCF (Vintage Computer Festival) East will be happening this weekend, March 31-April 2, 2017, at the InfoAge Science Center in Wall, New Jersey. This is just about a...

Newport. Most of these FBs were targeted at engineers doing wireframe and 2-d CAD. Probably most similar to Sun ZX (Leo). Yeah. We used the DEC- and VAXstation 3000 systems for 2D CAD (VLSI layout, chip design) and they were surprisingly decent at it - though that's as much a function of the old, s...

OOC, what resolution did the DECstation settle on?

I really should try to hook up my old DECstation 3000 again... haven't powered it up in a couple years and the huge HEAVY monitor didn't survive my most recent move.

I'm pretty sure it will "just work".

The only trouble you run into is when you change the number/order of disks, so sd0a suddenly becomes sd1a or soemthing. Not hard to fix with a boot CD or netboot though.

PDP-11 Processor Handbook - Photos

I was reminded today that I had a copy of the 1981 DEC Processor Handbook, covering their PDP-11 lineup... given that I had the day off, I finally got around to scanning some of the fascinating (to me) photos in it. http://www.bithose.com/gallery/pdp11_1981 for those interested. Someday I need to fi...

Wow, memories... I have a PC Server 520 (PCI/MCA hybrid FTW!) - needs memory and disks, but free to anyone who wants to drag it off. (What a great case mod it would make! Or end table!) This machine had a S/390 processor board in it at some point; much to my dismay that got stripped out before I cou...

9600-n-8-1 is the default serial mode on a Sun. Dumb question first, are you using a null-modem cable? Do you have a keyboard plugged into the 4500 as well? (If so, unplug it; you will want to change the input-device and output-device params at some point) The 3000/4000 series machines take a LONG t...

Note that OpenBSD supports a wider range of devices that your Sun's OBP does. So while you may not necessarily be able to boot from a given SCSI card, once you are booted from some onboard device, you can use other controllers for additional storage. This is common with people who have Ultra-5/10s, ...

My primary web and mailserver (http://www.bithose.com) is running Tru64 5.1 on a PWS500au. Bought the machine used for $600 in 1998 or thereabouts and it's been running ever since, except for OS upgrades. (4.0D -> 5.0 -> 5.1) AdvFS is pretty solid however I haven't done any fancy LV stuff with it; t...

Well, now it's a month later... and you probably found that array isn't that fast. I have the same storage box with 10x 18.2GB, 10K RPM drives in it on an AMI/LSI Megaraid... RAID5 across that many disks on a single SCSI bus is sloooow. But it's been reliable for 3 or 4 years now. I'm going to scrap...

mmm toasty

I was watching a video on SGIs site the other day, shows a dude walking down one of the rows of Columbia, down the back of two rows of machines. Can you imagine how hot it must be behind there then? When you've got a rack either side of you, blasting hot air straight onto you as you walk by? I hope...

I just need to make a cable to get to the MSC to find out for sure. If you have an Indy, an old Apple ImageWriter printer cable goes between the two and works quite nicely. Yeah, I've made my own mini-DIN serial cables (used on some older Suns and Nortel network hardware as well) - it's miserable w...

warmth...

See, I just vent the heat from the computer room around the rest of my apartment... barely need to use the actual furnace in winter. A/C in the summer gets pricy though. It's scary that you say the Octane is quieter than the Origin, given that the Octane is the loudest single machine I own. ;) Well,...

Funny you should say that...

I already have an Octane - but it's single CPU, I use it as my workstation (which sort of precludes it being a 24/7 server) and of course, an Octane is about the farthest from "rack-mountable" as they come. ;) I was looking (not very seriously) at dual 270MHz machines, I wouldn't settle for less. No...
