Re: your latest purchase

Beautiful PowerBook G4, been wanting a 12" model for years but finding one in good condition is difficult - most of them have bent cases and missing parts. I think it's one of the nicest laptops Apple ever produced.

Re: your latest purchase

Picked up this lot of 1990s Softimage demo reels from an eBay seller in Quebec. Now I need to get a good VCR so I can digitize them.

Re: your latest purchase

Just bought this boxed set of MicroStation 5 from eBay. I remember tinkering with it on a family friend's computer as a kid (he was an architect) and thinking the interface looked much cooler than AutoCAD. Also had a pretty nice renderer. Re: Trying to Resurrect a Macintosh Color Classic

So is it possible to resurrect dead optical drives by recapping them? I've seen tons of CD-ROM and DVD-ROM drives fail inexplicably over the years and always assumed it was the lens mechanism wearing out, but if it's just a capacitor problem then it should be easily repairable, yes?

Re: 3D Studio R4 IRIX render node

Been wondering about this one too - sounds intriguing, but I've never seen or heard of anyone actually using it, and I've never run across a copy. Probably because Autodesk kind of got it backwards with this one - render nodes should be cheap, common machines bought en masse and networked into an in...

Would you consider parting one of them out? I've got a Crimson that needs a rear plastic panel and a power supply.

Baby steps, haha. Looks like you're building a Cornell box? I presume you've got the Extreme version of Soft so you can get some radiosity going with Mental Ray?

Re: SoftImage HALP!

You need to choose the selection mode (object, polygon, etc) using the buttons at the bottom right of the screen - this guide should be helpful. Then you need to hold down the spacebar while you click an item to select / deselect it. This online reference manual is a good place to start - it will te...

Re: SoftImage|3d install

Jeremy Birn has a bunch of beginner Soft|3D tutorials on his web site. So does Ed Harriss. Probably a good place to start. There's also a New Riders book called "Inside Softimage|3D" that is probably the best guide aside from the original user's manuals. It goes for about $5 on eBay.

Hot Mix 16 Online

Just made the contents of Hot Mix 16 available online. This compilation dates from 1997 and includes a catalog of the major software packages available on the IRIX platform along with some screenshots and promotional videos (including the one where Steve Jobs raves about the Octane).

Enjoy!

Re: Anyone see this beaut on eBay

This makes me wonder what my Jurassic Classic is worth (or what it would be worth if I got it running)

And Necron, regardless of what you paid, congrats on picking up a rare system. Looking forward to seeing pics and specs when you get it home.
