Re: your latest purchase

Been wanting a dial box for years, finally had a chance to snag one on eBay at a good price last week.

Re: your latest purchase

So this is actually slightly embarrassing but I'll admit it: after my Volvo S70 burnt a valve I spent several weeks trying to find a suitable replacement. I had three requirements: it had to be cheap, reliable, and roomy enough to haul large items for my upcoming move to North Carolina. After seeing...

eBay: Very Clean Personal IRIS in Indiana

Seller is asking a hefty price considering that it doesn't even power up, but how often do you see a clean, complete PI on eBay anymore? Aside from some damage to the rear plastic fan grill it looks almost perfect.

Re: your latest purchase

Picked this up on eBay recently - Lightwave 3D 4.0 for Intel circa 1995. I already had a box with manuals, so this completes the package. Lightwave 3D 4.0.jpg LW3D was used primarily in broadcast to do TV commercials and VFX for shows like seaQuest and Babylon V. It started on the Amiga as part of t...

eBay: Indigo2 Impact R10000 from Pixar

Not my auction, but somebody here might be interested in this purple I2 Impact R10K system with a Pixar inventory sticker on top.

Re: Looking for O2 R5000

By design, the O2 skins interlock in a fairly complicated way that isn't terribly durable. From an industrial design standpoint they were some of the more ill-conceived SGI workstation shells. I think what we really need is a professional 3D scan of the skins that is modified and 3D printed using me...

What Indy addon card is this?

This Indy that recently sold on eBay has an unfamiliar addon card. It looks like some sort of network adapter, but it's not a Phobos card. Anyone recognize it? Should probably be added to the wiki if identified.

Edit: Some digging suggests this might be a token ring network adapter

Hi, unfortunately I sold that O2 almost a decade ago but I'll try to track down the buyer for you to see if he still has it.

Re: Blue Moon Render Tools Renderman

Blue Moon was a little industry myth. Like all things Animal Logic, there wasn't a ton of info on the net when it was a hot ticket item. IIRC BMRT was started by Larry Gritz while he was a programmer at Pixar. After he left to develop it independently, Pixar slapped him with a cease-and-desist clai...

According to the User's Manual it should be Alpha-compatible.

Re: Vintage machine features that spark your interest?

Same, if it can't do graphics then I'm generally not interested. SGI machines will always be my favorite vintage systems but I'll probably never own a Challenge or Origin. That said, I'm really not interested in modern systems either. The latest NVidia cards are incredibly powerful but for some reas...

Re: your latest purchase

I've had good luck with Linux Lite on a variety of systems. Its requirements are a 700MHz CPU and 512MB of RAM so it should run well on your ThinkPad. It's based on Ubuntu but looks and feels a lot like Windows XP / Mac OS Tiger, flat gray interface without a bunch of garish colors everywhere.
