Re: SGI Octane: IRIX always outputs to serial terminal

Ok, solved. I just had to replace empty* /usr/lib/X11/xdm/Xservers with /usr/lib/X11/xdm/Xservers.N. *) Probably caused by initial installation of 6.5.5 -> adding inst patch -> 6.5.22 (I was not able to start directly with 6.5.22 when installed over network... not sure where was the problem). If yo...

Re: SGI Octane: IRIX always outputs to serial terminal

What IRIX version are you running on that Octane? Do a 'uname -aR' What is troubling is that the hinv still doesn't show your gfx card in IRIX. I'm not sure if this is caused by the current kernel in /unix preventing hinv to detect your odyssey card. If you can list the contents of the root file sys...

Re: Which SGI box is your favorite and why?

In my PhD years in the mid '90s the university bought SGI Indy's to replace the ageing Sun IPC/SLC and SparcStations. Most of my unix experience came from that period using them for scientific researchand and, well, other 'stuff'. And hey, it booted with a chime! That was awesome. And the camera, th...

Re: How to open a cdrom drive XM-5401B?

i haven't ever seen a unit with grounding bolt and cable attached, and your unit doesn't have a grounding bolt either but the fact that there is a recession where the grounding bolt should be makes the shell hard to separate form the bottom plastic.

Re: How to open a cdrom drive XM-5401B?

I'm not sure and if you do, chances are that heat pads are glued between the plate and some controller chips. Be careful with that.
But check the grounding bolt recession first. Maybe by taking that into account you can release the shell without removing the bottom plate.

Re: How to open a cdrom drive XM-5401B?

It's been a while i disassembled such a unit but i can't remember the procedure anymore. I believe you need to remove all screws you can access from the bottom and then "slightly" open the aluminium shell to pass those tabs. Don't overdo it, or you bend the aluminium case. There is also th...

Re: Windows for serious business

We don't have ever more than 30-40 concurrent conferences. The application requirements are: - Dual core - a very specific Java release, that requires an Oracle contract to download - Windows 2008 R2 or 2012 (it crashes on 2012 R2) - 8GB of RAM Seriously, you can implement the same functionality wi...

Re: What's the correct method for reconnecting the RealityEngine DI1 edge connector?

That seems to be correct although i am not at my Crimson atm to verify this, so i will check in a few hours.

BTW, the threadbolt at the bottom-right of the picture is beginning to stick out already. It's probably only used to prevent the DI1 board form falling down

Re: Windows for serious business

Hear hear, This reminds me of an article in Heise Computer'Technik magazine in which they tried to use all 72 HT cores in a Windows server 2012 environment. Apparently Windows divides the cores into groups if there are more than 64 cores in a system, and depending on the BIOS you can choose two grou...

Re: What's the correct method for reconnecting the RealityEngine DI1 edge connector?

It almost sounds like something is wrong with the connector for the second RM4 board in the middle. Try to "dry-fit" the connector by sliding out the second RM4 about 10 cm towards you and check if the connector would mate with the RM4 without force. There could be a pin bent or a hole blo...

Re: What pointless thing are you doing right now?

I've written a CHIP-8 emulator in SDL2/C++. It's running PONG: chip8pong.png With SDL2 the I/O handling is quite easy. And i needed some practice with a few C++11 features. And it's only 629 lines of code... Sound is not in yet and shame on me for not making this on an IRIX box, but then i need to s...

Re: Fuel prototype (BLUE!)

Still looks stunning, Jan-Jaap! Keep that blue beast afloat. BTW, what is the PROM version? i'm wondering if the NEXTGEN logo remains across PROM updates... I guess a new PROM update will nuke it, so maybe it would be a good idea to do a dump. I have a tool that can search for Images encoded in the ...

Re: Mount the problematic o2 disk on Octance. How to diagnostic

Congratulations, and good that you got it solved.

These errors are hard to fix, and if you can't run IDE to diagnose the component then there is little left to try, except for swapping components and hoping you find the bad bunny.
