Re: C-Ray FP/CPU Benchmark Test Results

Thanks for the extra info! Alas I don't have time for anything more than the web page, and that needs a rewrite. Leaving it until next year. Main thing I want to do is move the sphract test up to be the main test, the scene test is far too short. Btw, did you know Phoronix adopted c-ray as one of th...

Re: An item is only ever worth what someone is willing to pay... :)

I have a bunch of brochures and manuals for the old Fisker Karma, I wonder if they'll be worth anything someday  I have a whole bunch of rare SGI manuals and books, leaving them for a while. Sometimes this sort of thing is very small scale but equally unexpected. I once bought a bunch of 68pin...

Re: C-Ray FP/CPU Benchmark Test Results

Good heavens, you're going to town with this one. :D Btw, the Mac Pro would be more optimal with 12 threads, 24, etc. What always amuses me about these results is the way those who initially appear shocked at the speed of newer systems fail to appreciate how comparatively well the SGIs are doing in ...

Re: C-Ray FP/CPU Benchmark Test Results

Thanks for the data! I'm tied up atm, will try and add the numbers to my site later this week. But bad news is that new Mac Pro is light years faster than 8 CPU Onyx 4. Sadly as it should be given the huge differences in time and tech between the two. :D I have some PCs which would just make the SGI...

Re: An item is only ever worth what someone is willing to pay... :)

No SGI machine will ever fetch this get this type of price though, as good examples of these machines are just too numerous Hold that thought. :D Ya just never know with this stuff. 8bit or ARM? Mainly 8bit. I do have some Arcs, but there's a point at which they lose my interest. I have a maxed-out...

Re: An item is only ever worth what someone is willing to pay... :)

But then, that's my point, ridiculous is in the eye of the beholder. :D One might think someone is crazy for buying a very famous painting for $20M, but if they then sell it on for $25M, well then not so crazy. Or if the painting is in some way very meaningful to them, and they can afford it, then n...

Re: An item is only ever worth what someone is willing to pay... :)

Of course it's also possible the higher bids were fake, just people along for the ride, etc. Happens a lot on ebay, people addicted to just winning auctions, but they never pay up.

As the title says GIJoe, they'd be worth whatever someone is willing to pay. ;)

Re: An item is only ever worth what someone is willing to pay... :)

I guess the key thing is, there's a difference between being irrational and actually having a rationale. :D Buying my Enterprise 128 could be called irrational, but I had genuine personal reasons for buying it, reasons that were important to me. Presumably the C65 buyer was merely two orders of magn...

I actually lol'd... I think the seller might need medical help to recover!! :D

Would have been neat if it had ended on 65 bids, hehe.

Re: An item is only ever worth what someone is willing to pay... :)

There is someone trying to sell an Amiga 1000 for $6k on ebay, like a tard. That's my point though, if someone is happy to pay that much, then why not. Most would laugh, but perhaps there's that one guy who's looking for a particular config, or something totally mint, etc. Who knows. I may see such...

Re: An item is only ever worth what someone is willing to pay... :)

Collecting, by it's very nature isn't rational! That may sum up most of us here. :D But hey, it's fun! Not just hobbyists though. I was once asked by a head admin at a major food factory if I had a particular very ancient IBM 8" floppy for an equally old version of IBM's mainframe OS. Their ma...
