Re: Computer with a real serial port

If not using my PCD-4H under Solaris 2.4 with "tip", probably the job will be done by my 11 year old IBM/Lenovo T60 runig Ubuntu 10.04LTS with an optional SER/PAR drive fitting into the CD/DVD drive bay/slot.

Re: Intel backdoor: not a bug, a feature (buy a new processor!!!)

Particularly relevant for people here: Neither early UltraSparc chips from Sun Microsystems, (...), are effected by Spectre or Meltdown, (...) Maybe but that doesn't mean it's better  UltraSPARC I --> in-order-exec but w/ high amount of cache-miss penalties. so nothing really bad. UltraSPA...

Re: Intel backdoor: not a bug, a feature (buy a new processor!!!)

First. Well, nothing is save in life but death. :) Second. As I understood, the kernel patch only applies to the "Meltdown" named attack but not for "Spectre", because for the later one you not need KPT/I. Or does I miss something? Source: https://m.heise.de/newsticker/meldung/An...

Octane video setup (not mine)

Browsing "the bay" for SGI Indigo and stuff of interesset, found this listing for an Octane 1 :Octane: with plenty of boxes, storage and cables. But it's from Croatia/Europe. Seems to come with a dongle. https://www.ebay.de/itm/SGI-Octane-1-Smoke-System/332500826755?hash=item4d6a97...

Re: Intel backdoor: not a bug, a feature (buy a new processor!!!)

The solution: IN-MEMORY ENCRYPTION for everything. I don't know hardware solutions but I expact the feature will be implemented with the next wave/generation of CPU's and chipsets, maybe RAM modules as well. In software you're already able to compensate this with e.g. Intel's SGX or AMD's SME/SEV , ...

Re: Intel backdoor: not a bug, a feature (buy a new processor!!!)

What irony: although I have CPU systems (i386, i486, SPARC V7) from the years before 1995 but the OS is so outdated that we don't have to speak about security at all. Soon the reboot wave in Amazon AWS should start.

Nice. Thx. :) Found...IBM workstation for smoke "finishing" system discreet_smoke.jpg If someone is interested in some (out-dated but informative) white papers, let me know. Seems to be a nice site: http://infernoflameflintflaresmoke.blogspot.de/2015/01/autodesk-flame-2015-extension-3-adds...

If Wikipedia (en) is correct the IBM ZPro 6221was bundled with Smoke starting from 2004 for around USD 65k. IFF was available later for linux.

I like workstations dedicated to only one purpose ...

Because RobhG's posts about "SGI for CGI", I remembered the "Hardware Setup Guide" manuals for discreet/AutoDesk flame. And look at the back view snippets of the workstations from several manuals. Space for expansions? Not really. Built to run one dedicated application set. SGI_O...

Re: your latest purchase

I just received a Sun Ultra2 workstation. I think it's got a Creator3D (as opposed to the regular, non-3D Creator) card in there. I don't remember non-creator Ultra 2 systems. (...) I'm pretty sure I have Creator3D, and certain it's Series 1. I've spent far, far too much time reading the Sun Frame ...
