Re: Archiver 0.1 - IRIX/IMD GUI for tar.

I don't have any myself, but I understand the Teac drives that SGI used have a plastic cog that tends to break/fall off.

Re: shell script: userfriendly.org comic strip viewer

Hmm, well... I don't know that I agree that you should teach antipatterns like using awk for only splitting lines just to keep it simple. I feel like I've seen too much of when people get taught one thing once and then goes on to blindly use it everywhere. I'd argue that my more complex (not really)...

Re: shell script: userfriendly.org comic strip viewer

I realize this is a throwaway script, but I can't help it... awk is more than { print $1 }. Scrape the URL from userfriendly's ancient markup: ... HTML=$(mktemp) wget -q -O $HTML $URL # URL is defined from user input SRC=$(awk '/ALT="Strip for/ { match($0, /src="[^"]*"/); url=sub...

Re: New O2 owner. It is so cute!

It can't do that on its own; it needs sash to read EFS or XFS. This is similar to second-stage boot loaders for SunOS and other unix systems. Interesting. The command that I was using is now making more sense: boot -f dksc(0,4,8)sashARCS dksc(0,4,7)stand/fx.ARCS --x So the SASH is sitting somewhere...

Re: Archiver 0.1 - IRIX/IMD GUI for tar.

I set up a mercurial repository (because I really like hg), and it should work on IRIX if you have python2.7. I have successfully built python3 so it should be just fine, though possibly a bit slow. Public URL: https://mercurial.shangtai.net/repo/Archiver Push URL: https://mercurial.shangtai.net/pus...

Re: Archiver 0.1 - IRIX/IMD GUI for tar.

So I'm wondering, jimmer, would you be open to collaborative hacking(mercurial / git repo) or is this project just for you? I can perfectly understand the latter :-)

Re: Fixing V6/V8 glitch fx

I am pretty sure VFC is not installed by default, it's on the foundation2 CD of the base 6.5 set (with at least an update in the 6.5.29 overlays with newer vfs files no doubt) I keep all my sgi installation files on NFS, to avoid wrist injury and insanity from swapping CDs, wich is pretty convenient...

Re: Archiver 0.1 - IRIX/IMD GUI for tar.

0.3 worked just fine out of the box for me, but it seems to expect tar to be gnu tar and not the sgi default which does not support the z flag.

Re: NIS Password format

My octane authenticates using LDAP, it's a bit quirky since I needed to run a local openldap server and use good ole' xdm login (clogin doesn't interface with PAM AFAIR) to get it to work. I don't remember why I had to set up the replication, but now that I look at the config file again it might hav...

Re: getopt_long for IRIX

NetBSD's pkgsrc has a package with netbsd-compatibility functions that include getopt_long. It's called libnbcompat. This works on IRIX, and might provide other useful things if you are feeling porty. http://pkgsrc.se/pkgtools/libnbcompat http://cdn.netbsd.org/pub/pkgsrc/current/pkgsrc/pkgtools/libn...

Re: How frequently you use your SGI (in 2017)?

I use my Octane every day, although it's mostly thunderbird and a terminal to the servers in the closet.
