Re: What pointless thing are you doing right now?

Ouch. Sprite, the canonical definition of unusability. What makes you say that? I'd love to hear about any experiences with anything other than that disk image from the GitHub repo . I'm not sure if pieces are missing, but from the command line cc/gcc won't compile anything. Although that on gxemul...

Re: WTB: Apple PowerBook G4 Titanium's motherboard, Wanted Dead or Alive

Hmm. I took a quick look last night, but couldn't find the unit. I thought it had a DVI connector, but perhaps I'm confusing it with the other TiBook I have.

Re: What pointless thing are you doing right now?

Running the Sprite OS (Ousterhout, et al) for the first time in gxemul. Because somebody at work made a remark the other day about how amazing some framework doing jail/container migration was, and it triggered nerdrage about process migration in distributed systems from the 1980s and 90s (Sprite, V...

Where are you located? I've got a 400MHz TiBook (Mercury?) around here somewhere that a cheap knock-off power adapter killed...

Re: How to measure time?

I don't wear a watch anymore (I used to wear a solar powered Casio G-Shock with WWVB automatic time synchronization too, and it may even be the same model as smj's), ... Never had a Casio that was solar powered. That would have been the replacement, had I not seen the Tik Tok watch band for the Nan...

Capslock to the left of the A? Always remapped to CTRL, as low in the software stack as I can manage it. (Chases kids off his lawn)

Re: [Sydney/AU] HP blade servers with 48Gb to 144Gb RAM per blade, EMC & Clarion SAN

I tossed the link out at work. Sadly our man in Oz is in Melbourne, and none of our Aussies have friends near Sydney. If you're open to donation and get a tax benefit from doing so, a colleague who lived in Fiji suggested donation to non-profit groups like Pacific Islands Chapter of the Internet Soc...

Some of Modology's icons are published in this thread from 2009, along with icons from several other members.

Re: Vintage Computer Festival August 5 and 6

Sorry, I wasn't offering to ship anything. Too many machines to be doing that. I was tempted by the Solbourne too, but like the Integrals I won my saving throw. However I was defeated when they cut the price of the VAXstation 2000 from $40 to $20. And now I can't figure out how to get the damn thing...

Re: Your first SGI encounter

Around 1988 or '89, a friend had dropped out of college and gotten a job at a local software company. They specialized in graphical toolkits for the common (non-PC) windowing systems of the day: X Windows, NeWS, VWS (pre-DECwindows on VMS), and several others. There was a strong realtime component, ...

Re: Vintage Computer Festival August 5 and 6

Out of the 25 DEC, HP and IBM workstations I took to the consignment room, 9 sold (for a small donation) before the end of Sunday. When I went to eliminate the requirement for a $5 donation, I was told a guy was interested in any remainders. (Turns out we work at the same company. In the same buildi...

Yes, a good time was had. There seemed to be several folks from the SeaTac area, and plenty who are familiar with trinitron's relentless hunger to possess all things Symbolics that still exist in the world... Thought of pentium when I saw the X68000. The restored Xerox Alto from Y Combinator was the...
