Re: Your favourite XKCD comic

I refuse to be limited to some arbitrary number of xkcd comics, unless that number is asymptotic to the number of xkcd comics currently known to exist.

Re: Computer with a real serial port

Laptops are a good choice because you don't need to worry about space for a separate keyboard, monitor, etc. But if you're looking for something less portable, I would suggest an old thin-client. They usually include one or two real serial ports, often a parallel port, USB, etc. You'll probably get ...

Picked up a couple TruePosition boards that combine a GPS receiver with an "oven"-stabilized or ovenized crystal oscillator (link). We'll see how far I get with the tinkering...

Re: Have any one seen any good anime lately?

I really liked the film version of Your Name , I think I watched it on a plane earlier this last year. Not so thrilled at the idea of JJ Abrams getting his hands on it... I mentioned Erased before - anybody notice the live action version on Netflix? I might be more optimistic if I hadn't tried to wa...

Hey, at least you've got plenty of warning. I didn't know Connect supplied compiled packages for PH/UX.

I could probably take the Octane PSU and SI gfx card off your hands. Work in Sunnyvale these days, re: pickup. LMK

Re: SCSI Storage devices

I've always had good luck with Adaptec 29xx or 39xx[x] controllers in x86, but Symbios/LSI cards should be fine too.

Re: Hard drives from storage arrays

At different times I've had trouble getting a SCSI drive relabeled on SGIs. I may have gotten around it by diddlng them in a second, already-running SGI machine. I doubt those were HP drives though. FWIW I've had similar issues with SCSI, SAS, and SATA drives on different platforms at different time...

Re: So I bought an Altix 450...

Yay, another A450! I haven't powered mine up in quite a while, unfortunately - I've got a boatload of 2GB DIMMs to install when I do set it up again. I tried to pull together a lot of advice from others and my own findings on OSes for the Altix machines in this thread: http://forums.nekochan.net/vie...

Re: I made this!

Cafe Press has been a pain about things that they think might be copyrighted - I had them reject a t-shirt with my college's name and a mug with a picture of an Octane on it, years ago. Zazzle has even (briefly) given me a hard time about logos related to an organization where I'm the director. I'd ...

Re: What pointless thing are you doing right now?

Ouch. Sprite, the canonical definition of unusability. What makes you say that? I'd love to hear about any experiences with anything other than that disk image from the GitHub repo . I'm not sure if pieces are missing, but from the command line cc/gcc won't compile anything. Although that on gxemul...

Re: WTB: Apple PowerBook G4 Titanium's motherboard, Wanted Dead or Alive

Hmm. I took a quick look last night, but couldn't find the unit. I thought it had a DVI connector, but perhaps I'm confusing it with the other TiBook I have.

Re: What pointless thing are you doing right now?

Running the Sprite OS (Ousterhout, et al) for the first time in gxemul. Because somebody at work made a remark the other day about how amazing some framework doing jail/container migration was, and it triggered nerdrage about process migration in distributed systems from the 1980s and 90s (Sprite, V...
