Re: For Sale: SGI Octane2 400MHz 1GB RAM (No faceplate/light bar/sleds)

If Rem or someone else picks this up, I picked up some lightbars and have a couple spares - I haven't tested them but expect I have a few that light up, if not I can make a LED modded light bar.

Re: The Problem with Apple

heh, reminds me of my P-II machine I had from the beginning of P-II 100 MHz FSB parts until well into P4 days when I moved to AMD for a while. Jobs definitely liked style and not a big fan of expansion. But he also liked things to work. Cook I think is hands off and the ship is being piloted by Ives...

Re: Garbage

what's the deal with the new iOS calculator? I'm behind, the wife-unit upgraded and complains of poor battery life so I keep telling my phone to wait until later. The only iOS calculator problem I know of is the stupid key-click in the calculator doesn't have an option to disable, doesn't take the s...

Re: The Problem with Apple

I'm convinced a big problem they have is over-engineering looks over all. And a key theme in Apple products is thinness. Thinness caused the MagSafe to be removed for USB-C power, so once again power connectors that are stressed, and can take your laptop to the ground. On the iPhone we get lightning...

Re: Obtaining licenses for old software

So as long as no one is bothering Autodesk I'm sure they could be convinced to not care. The moment they have to deal with it they have to start talking to $2000/day lawyers and $1500/day technical staff and managers and that's why we can't have nice things. actually there's this reputation that th...

Re: Obtaining licenses for old software

There is no reason for Adobe, Autodesk, whoever to dig up key generators. Or try and find source code for an old piece of software to reverse engineer and reimplement a license generator. They likely don't have the infrastructure available, and certainly they don't want to assign staff to something ...

Re: Broken IO6-G bought on eBay

http://www.sgistuff.net/hardware/systems/images/onyx2-io6g-2200.jpg Link to the photo on the page I mentioned earlier. You can just make out the markings on the tantalum cap in the photo. You can also see what the component at C0A8 looks like, but not read the markings. Looks like another one at D3H...

Re: Broken IO6-G bought on eBay

The board may operate or partially operate without those components, especially if you clean off the burn residue. If you're not using the video sync BNC connectors and you're not required to send back the board or you have trouble getting resolution it would be worth a try. Best of luck on getting ...

Re: Broken IO6-G bought on eBay

http://www.sgistuff.net/hardware/systems/origin2000onyx2.html Has a photo, looks like the tantalum cap is 35v 25uF, you can verify the physical dimensions off another of the same size on the board. Not sure what the component at C0A8 is. Looks like a capacitor maybe, some kind of ceramic cap. Someon...

Re: Broken IO6-G bought on eBay

I don't see the original listing. Was it recent? I'd look at the photos in the eBay listing, that's not shipping damage. Thats a missing tantalum cap and another that failed. You can see the burning from when that went boom. Tantalum capacitors often fail shorted and then explode. Sometimes taking n...

Re: New Tezro owner

reseating the IO9 makes sense. Just pulling it out and plugging it back in might be enough if it got dislodged or had some oxidation. I've been running one of mine a bunch - It's gotten cold, needed some electric heat :) I hope I don't have any of the same problems. But speaking of, did you put any ...

Not all, they don't do samples for EOL and obsolete, out of production parts. They stopped making the chip in the Fuel for example, there are zero left at mouser or digikey, and no samples.

Re: Fuel R14k cpu into octane1 ?

Dear All, thank you for the answers. The number of pins/contacts and voltage was the information I didn't find online, so thank you all for the input. Recently a R12k-360MHz sold for almost nothing. I guess that would have been an option to increase the speed - or at least clock speed - potentially...

Re: Fuel R14k cpu into octane1 ?

This was covered not long ago: viewtopic.php?f=3&t=16731958

TL;DR: R14000 has more pins and runs a lower voltage than the R12000 - CPU swap is not possible.

Re: SGI Wallpapers made from Techpubs graphics

cool! Except I'm playing with my Fuel and Tezro (well and Origin 350) tonight. Also my favorite machine isn't there, Indy.

Super cool even if you didn't come across the machines I'm on right now.
