Re: Matt Stone interview & SGI anecdote

It comes across as very arrogant, in a nonchalant and spiteful manner (thinking to be funny), As, I said, I think (I may be wrong) that you're over-reacting. I didn't find them arrogant or something like that, they just stated a fact. I would even say that I've found their tone rather neutral. They...

Re: Matt Stone interview & SGI anecdote

Anecdote? It's more like trashing for the sake of trashing, while strangely trying to come across as ‘interesting’ and ‘important’ (to have used ‘those expensive machines’) at the same time; bragging and trashing at once. I think you're "over-reacting". I listened to the interview and fro...

Re: Question: still worth buying a powerbook G4 12" 1.5GHz?

I used to own an iBook G4 1.25GHz and I sold it (300 euros). I don't think it's a good idea to buy a G4. It's not slow but the response time is not good. Safari and Firefox run ok, but not as smooth as on desktop PC. For $949 you can get a MacBook featuring a dual core processor, quite good accelera...

Re: Is it just me, or is MIPSPro 7.4 hard to find?

From what I understood, except for the annoying message, everything is functionnal. You may be able to compile a program, but the WorkShop debugger and other GUI tools won't start without a license. Oups, I never use any GUI, and for debugging, I use fprintf() or cmn_err() traces :) Then, except fo...

Re: For collectors only: R5000PC module for O2

Hmm, I'm not sure Alpha is a good example to show this idea with though, since the older Alpha CPUs are severely hampered by a tiny L1, something that wasn't rectified until the much better 21264. Yes, Alpha 21164 has 8 KB, direct mapped L1 instruction cache and 8 KB, direct mapped, write through L...

Re: For collectors only: R5000PC module for O2

Here is an example. Let's take one of my favourite systems, the mighty Alphaserver 4100. With one processor, the system that has 2 MB B-cache (5/300) is 5-20% faster than a system that has no B-cache (5/300E). If you max the CPUs to 4, then the system with B-cache is 30-50% faster than the uncached...

Re: For collectors only: R5000PC module for O2

There's no point otherwise to own a processor without an L2 cache. Not necessary true. Performance improvement from the larger L2 cache size should increase with the number of CPUs. That is, larger caches are more important in systems with multiple processors. Except on multi-cores processors, L2 c...

Re: For collectors only: R5000PC module for O2

I'd collect it for completing my collection of obscure and slow hardware. (That and low-density DIMMs) Price? Shipping? Location? Price: Make an offer. Note that the motherboard can be given with it, along with 192MB of memory. I don't know how much it is worth more than a standard R5K. Shipping an...

For collectors only: R5000PC module for O2

Only for collectors only, as it's pointless otherwise.

180MHz R5000PC processor module for O2, that is without secondary cache.

Re: ramdisk device driver, need a trace utility

Ok, problem solved regarding mkfs_xfs (or mkfs_efs). It's just a matter of creating good "canonical" hardware vertices (/dev/dsk or /hw/rdisk are clones of actual /hw/node/pci/1/scsi/0/target/disk/o blah blah). mkfs_xfs checks that. I successfully created an xfs partition, didn't have time...

Re: ramdisk device driver, need a trace utility

Is mkfs_xfs still causing trouble ? When I'm back in my home lab I'll see if I can see why that is. Is that source link at the top of the thread the most recent ? Yes, it's always the most recent code. I'm gonna work on it this weekend. But I'm pretty sure I can solve that issue along with the bloc...

Re: Nekochan - Europe 'open day' Sunday 20th Sept

Sehr gut ! That's not far from France.

If there are people that come from France, we may share a ride. Or I'll take the train to Stuttgart (there's the ICE or Thalys or something like that from Paris) and some people can pick me up ?

I'll be glad to be there.
