Re: Taking apart a PowerBook G4 12 inch - insane design

Holy shit, a serviceable design.

My, how the times have changed.

Re: WTB GIGA I-RAM GC-RAMDISK

I don't have one, but I've owned one. They were notoriously flakey devices, and didn't work with a lot of SATA controllers. They were also pretty picky about what kind of RAM you installed in them, which I found often impacted how long the battery backup lasted as well. In addition to that, mine wou...

Re: If SGI announced a non-x86 graphics workstation similar to their 90s machines today, would you buy it?

That doesn't sound very 90s at all. Back then, MIPS was a pretty decent competitor for x86. And SGI had some really bitchin' graphics hardware on top of that. The combination of a powerful CPU and a powerful GPU is what made those machines shine. What you're suggesting sounds like some sort of speci...

Re: What is this system?

Upon further research, I found this: http://museum.ipsj.or.jp/en/computer/pc/0012.html The top part kinda looks like the NEC Express 5800/150, but the door is wrong and there's no logo on the system on the video. The hunt continues, I guess. PS: The website above is a treasure trove for lots of Japa...

What is this system?

Just out of curiosity... I was watching a documentary last weekend about computing history (the documentary itself wasn't that great). In the first minute, specifically at 45 seconds, there's a short clip of some guy using a tower I've never seen before. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VPDy2y4AjSo D...

Re: UPS help

Just a quick update... Apparently I got through to someone on radar, and they're looking into the issue. Whether or not that means anything is going to get fixed is something else entirely, I've been in contact with Apple before regarding well known SMC bugs on the Mac Pro and that conversation ende...

Re: UPS help

I think it's a bug in OS X. I'm running an APC 1500VA Smart UPS over here (2010 Mac Pro). Under 10.8, when the UPS does a self test, I get a dialogue warning about the system running off backup power and that I should save my work and shutdown soon. I can just click "OK" and get on with li...

Re: Good Heavens the LaserWriter IIg is complex!

There's a little known upgrade board for these printers that is just as complicated. It was called the Xante Accel-a-writer II. It had a Am29000 RISC processor, slots for 72-pin SIMMs, offered a SCSI port you could plug an external disk drive into for font storage, and had a standard PC centronics p...

Re: Someone snagged a great Tezro deal on ebay...

Huh. That "missile simulator" reminds me an awful lot of these two posts: http://www.bunniestudios.com/blog/?p=3649 http://www.bunniestudios.com/blog/?p=3785 My guess is what whatever software the PowerPC chip runs was ran on the SGI host system instead, but they still needed that FPGA som...

Re: Setting resolution and enabling GPU with VNC

Yup. I've filed so many bug reports on this issue alone it's ridiculous. The few responses I got back from Apple Engineering were all along the line of "we're doing things the way we think they should be done and you're clearly wrong". OS X won't enable a GPU unless it has a monitor plugge...

WTB: APC SUA1500 UPS or equivalent

Greetings to all! I am looking to purchase one or two (preferably a matching pair) of UPS units. They don't need to have brand new batteries, but it would be nice if they still held a decent charge (enough so that the UPS doesn't complain about replacing the batteries- at least not for a couple of m...

Re: Sun patches... SOL w/Oracle?

Okay, do how do I get the patches? Trying to download them from Oracle just results in an error message that says "You do not have the required access privilege to download this patch". Apparently I need to register at some MyOracle Support site, but that wants a support identifier and I q...

Re: Sun patches... SOL w/Oracle?

I spent the majority of the evening messing around with the system. It seems fairly impressive when it works, but otherwise glitchy as hell. I couldn't maintain an iSCSI connection for more then 4 hours and CIFS sharing seems broken in more ways then one. I love the web GUI, but it doesn't seem like...

Re: Sun patches... SOL w/Oracle?

I'd be lying if I said I wasn't struggling to find a use for this thing. It's big, it's heavy, it's loud, and it sucks up a fair amount of power. My primary attraction to it was the iSCSI target abilities, since I wanted to mess around with netbooting various clients around the house via iPXE (sanbo...
