Re: Things to buy....

I’m hoping they’ll bump up the DPI on the ultrawide curved 34” format soon.

Re: A Guide on Your Options for non-x86 Computers (2017)

Not really, our splatoon clan has a few competitive members (e.g. play for $$$) and it runs on nintendo. We also play MK8, smash, and some of us play ut2004 which although a PC game it attracts more mature audiences vs. the teens and 20-somethings screaming about in overwatch and whatever the lates...

Re: A Guide on Your Options for non-x86 Computers (2017)

It wouldn't surprise me if in 10 years or so we will be reminiscing about being able to install fully featured applications on clients (PC's) and run them without phoning home…. Non SaaSy!    Tell that to those of us who still using win32 apps from 15 years ago that need a COM ...

Re: A Guide on Your Options for non-x86 Computers (2017)

My ipad pro is right on par with the i7 in my razer gamer-laptop (i7-7500u) according to geekbench, Eh? This sounds hinky. Are geekbench scores really comparable across architectures/OSes? Geekbench claims it to be true for most workloads. That’s kinda their schtick. The ipad certainly *feels* fast...

Re: A Guide on Your Options for non-x86 Computers (2017)

The A-series chip in the iPad Pro is actually getting into the low performance range for Intel designs -- I'd say it's even competitive with, though clearly does not eclipse, i3 -- but I think we have a long way before there are Apple ARMbooks. My ipad pro is right on par with the i7 in my razer ga...

Re: A Guide on Your Options for non-x86 Computers (2017)

Talos is absolutely a no go with such high price. For that amount of money I can build a Xeon monster Go for it. Just don't complain in 10 years when your only choice is Intel no matter how much you pay. That's a depressing and bleak dystopian future. :( Arm seems to be doing well ;) many more syst...

Re: Vintage machine features that spark your interest?

Same, if it can't do graphics then I'm generally not interested. SGI machines will always be my favorite vintage systems but I'll probably never own a Challenge or Origin. That said, I'm really not interested in modern systems either. The latest NVidia cards are incredibly powerful but for some rea...

Cellphones. I use ublock origin, you should try it sometime. I also like having millions of songs in my pocket, but if others here want to wind up their victrolas, more power to 'em. Oh yes, I do have a record player, an old Technics I picked up for $20 to listen to my dad's vinyl. The sound is... a...

Re: Things that make your blood boil

HD (not 1080 or full-hd) was a gazillion times better than a snowy, ghosty NTSC signal even with the same antenna. Kids these days don't know how good they have it. 8-) That said, FHD is most often the cheap option for a computer these days. I DEMAND 300dpi on a laptop or 200 dpi on a desktop. My an...

Re: Low power home network setups

My router/modem/nas are in the entertainment rack with TV, consoles, small aquarium, etc. The whole lot is on an eaton UPS with a power meter but it doesn't read below 50 watts so unless I turn on the TV and/or PS2 (the switch, wiiu, and stereo don't pull enough juice unless I perhaps turned it all ...

Re: Mac Pro El Capitan Recovery?

Yeah, there has been an expectation for a while now that eventually Apple would figure out another way to prevent people from using hardware more than five years old. Funny how that business model works. ;) What exactly is the process for replacing the boot.efi file? All the procedures I can find o...

Re: Mac Pro El Capitan Recovery?

You need to replace the boot.efi with your hacked version again. I got into the same pickle with my MP1,1 on yosemite. Apple did an update that scrambled a few files (there was one other in addition to the boot.efi, there may be more now). Normally updates were fine so I was really caught flat-foote...
