Re: Mac OS 9 in 4K res - pointless evening

I’m guessing vmware or similar. But that wouldn’t be worthy of a forum post??? Everybody hits that “use native rez” button once with a legacy OS just for giggles... Or you could read the OP: The Radeon 9000 Pro works fine. =) This is a 22-inch display, running at 3840×2400. I’m guessing a t220/t221 ...

Re: your latest purchase

One of them I'm planning to upgrade to Xeon E3-1265L V2. They are quad core and the TDP is 10W above the rating of the heatsink, but I think they will just throttle down if needed. I considered an upgrade like this with a thinkpad w520 but the scientific testing by internet neckbeards confirmed tha...

Re: iMac Pro review

I used the razer egpu setup for a while, it’s great for games but honestly a separate laptop and desktop serves my needs much better than laptop+egpu. A huge headache and a lot of programs are poorly optimized for the bandwidth bottleneck. For the cost of a razer core you can get into a base worksta...

Re: A Guide on Your Options for non-x86 Computers (2017)

I was thinking more of the amazon failure last year that wiped out millions of IoT devices and all sorts of different services, but your example is good too. We have an expensive fiber business service at our shop and my cellphone tether is much more reliable (and faster, and unlimited). Aaahh, IoT....

I’m hoping they’ll bump up the DPI on the ultrawide curved 34” format soon.

Re: A Guide on Your Options for non-x86 Computers (2017)

Not really, our splatoon clan has a few competitive members (e.g. play for $$$) and it runs on nintendo. We also play MK8, smash, and some of us play ut2004 which although a PC game it attracts more mature audiences vs. the teens and 20-somethings screaming about in overwatch and whatever the lates...

Re: A Guide on Your Options for non-x86 Computers (2017)

It wouldn't surprise me if in 10 years or so we will be reminiscing about being able to install fully featured applications on clients (PC's) and run them without phoning home…. Non SaaSy!    Tell that to those of us who still using win32 apps from 15 years ago that need a COM ...

Re: A Guide on Your Options for non-x86 Computers (2017)

My ipad pro is right on par with the i7 in my razer gamer-laptop (i7-7500u) according to geekbench, Eh? This sounds hinky. Are geekbench scores really comparable across architectures/OSes? Geekbench claims it to be true for most workloads. That’s kinda their schtick. The ipad certainly *feels* fast...

Re: A Guide on Your Options for non-x86 Computers (2017)

The A-series chip in the iPad Pro is actually getting into the low performance range for Intel designs -- I'd say it's even competitive with, though clearly does not eclipse, i3 -- but I think we have a long way before there are Apple ARMbooks. My ipad pro is right on par with the i7 in my razer ga...

Re: A Guide on Your Options for non-x86 Computers (2017)

Talos is absolutely a no go with such high price. For that amount of money I can build a Xeon monster Go for it. Just don't complain in 10 years when your only choice is Intel no matter how much you pay. That's a depressing and bleak dystopian future. :( Arm seems to be doing well ;) many more syst...

Re: Vintage machine features that spark your interest?

Same, if it can't do graphics then I'm generally not interested. SGI machines will always be my favorite vintage systems but I'll probably never own a Challenge or Origin. That said, I'm really not interested in modern systems either. The latest NVidia cards are incredibly powerful but for some rea...

Re: Things that make your blood boil

Cellphones. I use ublock origin, you should try it sometime. I also like having millions of songs in my pocket, but if others here want to wind up their victrolas, more power to 'em. Oh yes, I do have a record player, an old Technics I picked up for $20 to listen to my dad's vinyl. The sound is... a...

Re: Things that make your blood boil

HD (not 1080 or full-hd) was a gazillion times better than a snowy, ghosty NTSC signal even with the same antenna. Kids these days don't know how good they have it. 8-) That said, FHD is most often the cheap option for a computer these days. I DEMAND 300dpi on a laptop or 200 dpi on a desktop. My an...
