Re: your latest purchase

A country with two different voltages for household outlets would be quite odd. Fortunately Japan isn't so strange, it uses 100V throughout, but with two different frequencies (60 Hz in the west, 50 Hz in the east). A 16% difference in frequency is much less of a problem than 100% difference in vol...

Re: Vintage Computer Festival August 5 and 6

Girls (unless they are geek, but geek girls usually have moustache) don't like computers, no matter if you explain you reasons, they believe it's all resources wasted with computers. When will you be applying for a job at Google?  Sometimes I wish we had likes or upvotes on posts. Howeve...

Re: Vintage Computer Festival August 5 and 6

But my wife is already upset that I am filling up our tiny bay area apartment with old SGI equipment Girls (unless they are geek, but geek girls usually have moustache) don't like computers, no matter if you explain you reasons, they believe it's all resources wasted with computers. They claim they...

Re: Talos Secure Workstation

The CPUs are surprisingly cheap Is this pair of chips competitive on a performance basis with e.g. the new AMD Threadripper? Board and chips are about double what a new TR4 system costs. I doubt it's double the performance, but if it's on par at least... This board looks a ton nicer than the curren...

Re: your latest purchase

PC-9821Cx2. And everything I was finding suggested PC-98s ran on 100V instead of 120V... Japan line is 100v, 50hz. A computer after the mid-80's is almost guaranteed to be an SMPS so +-20% or more should be no problem. and after the 90's, autoranging 90-280v became ubiquitous. You will have a probl...

I'm sure CHC can fill us in on the details, but I was under the impression that it ran standard PPC linux?

"open" is very different from being supported by more than two or three distros tho. Look at vs320 support, and that is x86 based!

Re: Talos Secure Workstation

IMO, the price for the board and chips is downright cheap when you consider the low volume and what you are getting. But running the price up for a box, disk, and RAM to $7500 seems crazy to me, even tho that's about what I would guess such a machine to cost overall. I would have guessed around $5k ...

Re: Car Talk

Charger/Challenger are good, so long as you get the 8-speed, as well as Durango/GC, but those are all just spiced up Mercedes's (W210 and W166, respectively). When I was working at (the other EV conversion place in town) we did a few ML450s and Jeep GC's, all the mounts were identical :P I like the ...

Re: Cyber Clean

Doesn't look like it leaves a residue. I was more concerned about the anti-static properties. It looks (and apparently works) nothing like the clay bar I use on my cars, are you talking about a different sort of detailing clay vs. the hard rubber to scrape off impurities? This looks kinda like silly...

Looks gimmicky, but I would have said the same about magic erasers before I tried them, so...

My x220 could really use this treatment; and maybe my w520 too.

somehow seeing the barebones PHPbb theme here with a simple banner at the top makes me super nostalgic. :D It never ceases to amaze me, the number of incompetent boobs out there who can manage to fuck up a perfectly useable webserver package. Mind, this site is run by one person on lightweight hard...

Re: [Not Mine][eBay] IBM ThinkPad Power Series

IDK, haven't used a T440. But the L420 is every bit as sturdy as a T420, perhaps even more so. It's thicker, and heavier, and plastic which tends to not dent as easily but will shatter. The issue with the *40 series is the garbage trackpads on all models. At least the L440 doesn't have the garbage &...

Re: [Not Mine][eBay] IBM ThinkPad Power Series

I would guess around $100 but I have no interest in this machine, anyways. You see old x86 thinkpads selling for several hundred dollars, too. It doesn't mean anybody's buying. At least these are something different. Shame they are so beat up and broken, otherwise he might be able to sell to the col...
