Re: What extremely rare (non-prototype) computers do you wish you could find?

I don't know how rare it is, but I'd love an onyx deskside. When I was like 15, I read this article in a video game magazine about the N64, and they were talking about how the initial hardware was based around the Onyx. Or something. This was ages ago I kinda fell in love with it. I was already and...

Re: The Problem with Apple

I have an amdek amber video screen.. use it with apple 1 and 2e on occasion. Great picture, horrible high pitched whine. Some day I'll tune it up but it runs for hours without problem.

Re: Turning your back on windows

I tried ubuntu warty, breezy, etc. It always seemed promising but I used to be hardcore gentoo user so never took it seriously. (You should have seen my make.conf!! Custom cflags etc for my cpu which was an early p4 with RDRAM  ) I never saw the advantage over "real debian" unless you...

Enjoy your 11" amber (or green... preferably green) CRT then. Who needs 80 columns of text when 40 will do?

Re: Turning your back on windows

I also like slackware. I use it with suckless dwm/dmenu... But its more of a hobby for me to boot into on the weekends, and I don't do that too often, anymore. I need windows and mac for day job. For me it will forever be the canonical lnux. Every other distro manages to screw up something. I bet it...

Re: The Problem with Apple

You can swap *20 and *30 keyboards super easy if you want. No need to justify chicklet superiority. The battery lasts longer because you aren't giving up all that volume to a second enclosure, connectors, fasterners, bms circuitry, etc. More volume for energy storage. For one of the vehicles I'm wor...

Re: The Problem with Apple

I choose Apple hardware specifically because I don't have to dick around with it. And as far as "expandability" goes, who stores more than a few dozen gigabytes of data locally anymore? I can't remember the last time I filled up my laptop's SSD. I've got my music collection, and that's ab...

Re: Advice Request: I need to sell a Pineapple (Apple II clone)

I have a Unitron apple II clone (Taiwanese, not Brazilian) and unsuccessfully tried to unload it for a fair amount of time. I decided I'd rather hold onto it than trash it, but as the value of *real* Apple ]['s are fairly low... kind of a shame as I'm sure period clones are very rare now. I also don...

Re: has anybody ever used SONY MiniDisc/Data?

BTW, no matter how cool the idea of storing data on small MO cartridges looked good in The Matrix, flash drives (CFs, USB-pendrives etc) were on the horizon (with a best ratio MB/cost) and the era of magnetic removable medium on the whole was about to its bitter end. I remember the early USB flash ...

I would be but a half-dozen timezones too far away.

It's rather depressing now, how long you've been trying to offload this.

Re: your latest purchase

How else are you supposed to plug in that gaming GPU to your laptop and charge it with only one cable? http://forums.nekochan.net/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=16731617#p7398178 TB3 uses a USB-C port, but carries a PCIe, DisplayPort connection as well as the usual USB and power. USB-PD is new. Before C, t...
