Re: your latest purchase

Excepting network drivers and razer synapse (which is optional), neither one of those machines comes with anything above and beyond a default OS load out, if you had downloaded a clean image from microsoft or apple.

Re: your latest purchase

Neither my razer blade stealth nor macbook pro came from the factory with spyware installed like superfish. Our IT is still trying to hand out the X1 carbon with a 1-button trackpad and fn-touchstrip. Nobody wants them. The trackpoint is useless if the buttons are crap. People complaining about the ...

Re: your latest purchase

Does anybody actually like modern lenovos, with their touchstrip in place of fn-keys, garbage trackpoint buttons, garbage trackpads, spyware bundled software, garbage keyboards? If you really want a laptop made the way "they used to be made" get a toughbook, and don't complain about the pr...

Re: How can Apple reclaim its dominance over PC-based workstations?

I used to have a thunderbolt display and it was similar, you could feel heat venting out the bottom. Especially with everything cranked up (in a bright office and powering a laptop) But the case stayed fairly cool to the touch. Now I have dell P2415Q displays and there is no fan, they barely get sl...

Re: How can Apple reclaim its dominance over PC-based workstations?

The imac has both greater volume and vent surface area than the mac pro, so no surprise, it can handle more power. Plus, if you look at the interior photos of the imac pro on apple's website, you can see that not only did they take up a lot of room for speakers, there is still more dead/empty space ...

Re: How can Apple reclaim its dominance over PC-based workstations?

It was sold with external thunderbolt expansion... and yes, the form factor.

The later cheesegraters (4,1 and 5,1) still command a hefty price used because of the limitations of the 6,1.

Re: How can Apple reclaim its dominance over PC-based workstations?

No upgrade parts were offered because it wasn't standard - the best you could hope for is to upgrade your D300 to a D700 from another mac pro. There are power limitations as well - the juice wasn't there, and neither was the radiator capacity. The apple upgrade path from this machine is to buy a new...

Re: How can Apple reclaim its dominance over PC-based workstations?

Wasn't that the main complaint for that box before it was even available for sale, was that the GPU couldn't be upgraded? It may be a disappointment for some owners but it should have never been a surprise. It wasn't even an MXM module...

Re: How can Apple reclaim its dominance over PC-based workstations?

The only gripe that I have is with Apple themselves as a company and not with the machine, as they seemingly abandoned a great design, in not offering an upgrade for the GPU side of the machine during its relevant lifespan! And for keeping dead quiet about their future plans for the Pro line. They ...

Re: How can Apple reclaim its dominance over PC-based workstations?

If you want a proper workstation, look no further than the new HP Z8: https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2017/09/hp-show-us-what-a-real-pc-workstation-looks-like-with-a-56-core-3tb-z8/ up to 56 cores (112 threads) up to 3TB RAM up to 3 graphics cards ... and pretty much everything else you can dream o...

Re: How can Apple reclaim its dominance over PC-based workstations?

Dead to apple, at least. They would never go back to PPC, and they wouldn't go further upmarket to a POWER9, either. I still predict an A-series mac if intel can't keep up. What needed to happen for the ppc-x86 transition was emulation of ppc code faster than native. I'm not so sure the requirements...

Re: How can Apple reclaim its dominance over PC-based workstations?

Macbook pro with A-series processor. PPC is dead. Investing heavily into the workstation market is a fool's errand. Apple will do better by pushing in the low-power space where the real innovation lies, and then building out those parts to the laptop and eventually desktop form factors. The new ipho...
