Re: your latest purchase

The big advantage of our Garmin Virb is not only the built in GPS and gyro (no idea if gopro has this as well or not) but it also has ANT+ and bluetooth. You can connect it to an ELM327 and have vehicle data overlaid right onto your video. I suppose it also works with ANT HRMs etc but the virb is re...

Re: Things to buy....

At some point, when I can factor it in, I would like to get my hands on one of these: R0165396-02.jpg It's certainly not something that I would have an everyday practical use for, but it sure would come in handy in order to carry out proper SMT repairs on my ageing fleet of systems. I've been disap...

Re: your latest purchase

I've got two old pairs of Gateway 2000-branded Altec Lansing speakers and they certainly pleasantly surprised me with their output, so having a Roland device like this must be even beyond that. The old Compaq "JBL Professional" speakers were great too. I had a set with the interchangeable...

Re: Computer with a real serial port

Panasonic cf-53/cf-54, 33, etc.

I like my cf-53 more every year and I'm thinking about getting a 33 to play with. Looks neat.

Unlike Lenovo they almost fully comply with the rs232 spec (as I found out with a T61).

Re: SOLVED: Smelly screwdriver handles? (juvenile humor aside..)

I've had some felo brand screwdrivers with rubbery foam handles (ergonic) for several years now. They don't smell like much of anything and the stuff is both bulletproof and grippy.

Re: What pointless thing are you doing right now?

Yes, they show open circuit with a DMM  So long as they aren't like tiny 0402 package or some crazy thing they are pretty easy to change. (my hot air station can't be turned down low enough to keep components sized like that from blowing away). I tried an ips upgrade on this guy a few years...

Re: What pointless thing are you doing right now?

Tried some upgrades on my thinkpad x220 and fried it. Disassembled it to clean the fan and re-grease the heatsink. Worked a treat. Then I swapped the display for a better one (HD IPS) and blew some fuses for the backlight because I left the battery plugged in. Now I get to take the planar out again ...

Re: Octane arrived. Advice on small problem.

MLA is not SOG capable but is SOG tolerant. (It doesn't work with a sun cable).

At least the one I owned. There may have been different models or revisions.

Re: Octane arrived. Advice on small problem.

Even with the 13W3 adapter don't you also need an SOG monitor to avoid getting the Matrix-like "green tint" syndrome? You can strip out the sync with some passives. There are fancier "sync separators" available that aren't necessary because the SGI provides separate sync already...

Re: Cryptocurrency?

"buy bitcoin with credit card" has been trending on google, which is about all you need to know. IIRC CHC had purchased a butterflylabs miner a couple years ago. I ran a gpu miner for a few weeks on the radeon 5770 in my mac pro and could have made enough after the fees and everything to b...

Re: FS: It's trackball time! (Logitech Marble FX x2, Ergo MX x1)

Sounds like your bog-standard "cheap smps coil whine" to me. Short of potting the chokes in epoxy there isn't much you can do about it. No idea what sort of mayhem *that* might cause. Anyways, I may be interested in the trackmans. How does scrolling work in windows 10? Hold down the red bu...
