Re: Fuel DMediaPro DM6 PCI Digital Video

According to one of sgi's notorious internal pricing guidelines (located here) the US asking price for the DM6 in 2006 was 5,600 dollars...

cnet has one of their usual inadequate little technical tidbits about it here.

That's a treasure trove alright. And to think SGI dumpsterized that stuff by the ton once they decided to purge MIPS/IRIX...

Re: is something going wrong with the movie industry?

Despite the horrible reviews I actually watched ISRA 88 (a.k.a. Mission 88 a.k.a. Beyond the Edge ) and quite enjoyed it. Not the physics, because they got that all wrong and then gave up even trying to explain it, but since I think that other universes exist beyond our own (bubble universes as desc...

Re: Why a static address not shown on the router

Are you able to login to the router's control panel? What router is it? dd-wrt is router firmware, a lot of different router manufacturers use it.

Re: Your Most Unbreakable Records in Sports History

Much though I hate too toot my own horn, I like to think of myself as a world-class good skier. My brother, who lives in Summit County Colorado, is even better. Lord how that chaps my ass! He competed on the Bud Lite pro mogul tour for a couple of years. I typically manage to get in ~30 days of Colo...

This shows how to do it for pretty much every version of Irix, courtesy of our very good friend Kaya Kupferschmidt:

Re: Created an account without password but can not login

You're saying you can't login to the machine using any of the accounts? That's an easy problem to solve if you have bootable IRIX installation media. If not you need a login page exploit. What version of Irix?

Re: Unhappy Octane frontplane, capacitors leaking. Anyone spec'ed replacements?

That's a Panasonic Aluminum SMD series capacitor, but that diode looks pretty darned unhappy too, looks like it got too hot but the board underneath it doesn't look charred, and why does the silkscreen say "CR" if it's a diode??? :?: :?:

IRIS Vision

Bunch of the SGI guys who left to found 3dfx, at 16:35 they discuss SGIs short-lived entry into the PC graphics arena, the infamous IRIS Vision, kinda fascinating:

...but per pixel operations broke us out of the fixed functionality pipeline... Agreed, I first heard about this years ago in a blue sky talk John Carmack gave, but now companies like Euclideon Unlimited are apparently poised on the brink of making it a reality. The other SiliconGraphics thing I us...

Really great pictures, thanks for posting!

It's interesting that Mental Ray's been around for almost 30 years and it's only at version 3.14. I guess you could say it became feature complete at an early age...
