open source <> no cost software
free patches <> free support

Re: Downloading IBM fixes will require a support contract!

Well, this "accepted industry practice" rings a bell: http://forums.nekochan.net/viewtopic.php?f=18&t=16724127

I think the "industry" is killing its own propietary hardware and software using these "practices".

Re: HP - Change to Patch services effective September 18, 20

This week a good friend and customer asked me about changing a Sun server with Oracle for a HP Itanium with HP-UX. He told me he had a cost-effective server budget. I powered up my PA-RISC machine and when I gone to search software updates I found this new limitation, the explanation is so stupid .....

Re: RISC workstation as desktop

Another alternative for a RISC workstation could be a PPC Mac Pro. I've got a dual 1.8 GHz Mac Pro with 1.25 GB of RAM and it works fine for daily use, even for picture management or video editting.

The machine works nicely both on Mac OS X and Ubuntu PPC, and you can virtualize Windows using Qemu.

Re: Linux Graphicscard for IBM 275

I've got an IBM 7044-170 with dual boot with two hard disks. The machine originally came with a GXT4000P card that doesn't work on Linux. I tested two video cards: S3 Trio64V+: identified on AIX as GXT110P, this card is no longer supported on AIX 5.3 (read AIX 5.3 release notes), but it works fine o...

Re: tutorial: Installing Gentoo on Octane from Arch server

As far I know, GNU/Linux has limited support on Octane and it is experimental.

Is it functional or just a curiosity ? I have an Indy and Debian is fully functional (and fully slow), read my posts to find additional information about GNU/Linux on SGI Indy.

Re: Hello, a new dude as come.

I sent you a private message to contact in Spanish. There are very few people interested in these topics in Spain, usually I enter on IRC Hispano (channel #irix) and, if you are lucky, you can find up to 4  people talking about RISC architecture and Unix. I hope we can share some local inform...

Re: Hello, a new dude as come.

Hi wanamino, I'm also a Spanish sgi fan. My first sgi machine was an Indy, just some months later I bought an Octane2 in Spain just for 80 €, and in two years I have bought several RISC machines. I love Unix systems and RISC architectures, you will find on this site lots of useful information about ...

Re: SGI and the MIPS-based workstation market

Some days ago I was copying some files to an external USB hard disk (about 30 GB of data splitted in 1 GB files) in a Linux system via ssh. The system has 2 GB of memory and usually it uses less than 200 MB, in this example 181 MB: $ free -m total used free shared buffers cached Mem: 2023 405 1618 0...

Re: SGI and the MIPS-based workstation market

If you're talking about server platform, I don't see how having a MIPS system would add anything that isn't already possible with x86 or whatever CPU, and Linux or other decent OS. Fact is, right now, the fastest performing server is an i7 XEON. I cannot imagine what kind of MIPS development would ...

Re: SGI and the MIPS-based workstation market

What about a commodity server with a MIPS processor inside ? I can imagine a server that could work with IRIX and Linux, an IRIX version full of OSS enterprise software (Samba, Apache, MySQL, ...) and an official SGI Linux, or Red Hat/Suse distribution, and let customers to decide what operating sys...

Re: How much memory do I have?

Hi Tricipio, I also own an Octane 2, bought in Spain through eBay, just 89 € + shipping. I suggest you extract and clean all your memory modules, and check your monitor type, it must support SOG. I just have found one SOG monitor for my Octane 2 and my Indy. Some time ago, I had a problem due to the...

Re: Learning Spanish?

I suggest to watch Spanish movies with Spanish subtitles, we use the same method in Spain to learn English: lots of people watch House, Heroes, Lost, ... in English with subtitles to listen and understand English. Search on the Internet subtitled Spaniard movies. Sometimes the translation is difficu...
