Re: ACARD/SSD vs. 1Gb/10Gb Ethernet

Hi Jan-Jaap, no I have not done any tuning. Just wanted to see set of baseline numbers. I played around with Jumbo frames when I first got 10Gbe going with Macs and found that this only had very small impact on performance 5-10% (using AFP rather than NFS) and sometimes Jumbo frame actually resulted...

(less) dubious Onyx350/4 - 8CPU/V12/MAD/RAD/FW/USB/FC/10Gbe

Hi Nekochaners, thought I would post new hinv for dubious (was Tezro) as it has now morphed into Onyx350/4 with V12 and various other bits of paraphernalia inside. Main details are: 2 x Numalink'ed Onyx350/4 with 4 x 1GHz + 4 x 800MHz, V12, 16GB RAM, RAD/MAD PCI Audio Cards, LSI Dual 4GB FC, Adaptec...

Re: ACARD/SSD vs. 1Gb/10Gb Ethernet

Hi Nekochaners, updated thread to 1Gb/10Gb Ethernet as I got Neterion XFrame 10Gbe PCI card via ebay. Was expecting BIG improvement and was hoping to get better performance from 10Gbe than FC... So here is reality based on first test: dubious 9# diskperf -W -D -n "10Gb Ethernet NFS" -c4m t...

Re: low level format with FX

Hi hhoffman, Ok if it is IBM fc disk then you should be able to find spec sheet on hgst site. Read details on scsi format command and check to see if this allows setting of sector size. Example: https://www.hgst.com/sites/default/files/resources/10K300_SCSI_Functional.v6.pdf https://www.hgst.com/sit...

Re: low level format with FX

Hi hhoffman, Two possible ways to recover are: 1. see if there is vendor tool 2. Use Linux tools. I am pretty sure last time I had problem this was fixed via Linux utilities - sg3_utils (sg_scan, sg_format etc) Bit of web surfing should find it. Issue is typically disk with 520 sector size needs to ...

Re: ACARD/SSD vs. 1Gb Ethernet

Hi tomvos, I posted my acard ARS-2320S numbers in other thread. Both Plextor M6 & Samsung 850 are rated around 500MB/sec so well above what U160 SCSI can handle. Seems like simplest way to get good performance from single drive. Have you enabled read/write cache and command tagging (via fx label...

Re: Octane2/Onyx350/4 - ACARD ARS-2160H/ARS-2320S with Samsung SSD

Hi Jan-Jaap, Interesting about LSI all having same driver. I have LSI LSI7204XP-LC in Onyx350/4, but nothing except switch to connect it to. I also went ebaying and ordered LSI SAS3442X-R with 4 internal / 4 external SAS/SATA lanes and as I was over excited picked up 10Gb Neterion XFrame card. Also ...

Re: Origin 350, 4 x 1 Ghz, 4 GB RAM

Hi Jan-Jaap, Xiri & others, I read Neterion XFrame doco & it indicates that you “should not change physical interface” module. Has anyone tried or looked at possibility of changing from SR/LR optical to 10GBASE-T ? I see that there are physical media converters available, but these cost as m...

Re: Octane2/Onyx350/4 - ACARD ARS-2160H/ARS-2320S with Samsung SSD

Hi Jan-Jaap, Really nice job on install, presume as you have removed IO9 that chassis is Numalink’ed to main boot box. Saw a few postings on LSI board and no guestion on it being great way to get good disk performance with low effort and cost (compared to FC). I have some 6Gb SAS SSDs (again install...

Re: Octane2/Onyx350/4 - ACARD ARS-2160H/ARS-2320S with Samsung SSD

Hi Jack, That is good single disk result. Only one problem.... Need fibre channel kit. I used to have this: http://forums.nekochan.net/viewtopic.php?f=14&t=13590&p=7311841#p7311841 But it is long gone now via eBay, though I still have controllers (HBAs for Octane2, Onyx350/4 and Mac) and bro...

ACARD/SSD vs. 1Gb/10Gb Ethernet

Hi Performance Testers, having done SSD test I was curious to see how Onyx350/4 did on NFS share via Gigabit Ethernet (1Gbe). The NFS server is 8 Core Apple Xserve with 10Gbe to 10Gbe switch and then 2x1Gbe LAG groups to 1Gbe switch: So have: <XServe + 10Gbe> <-----> <Netgear 10Gbe Switch> <--2x1Gbe...

Octane2/Onyx350/4 - ACARD ARS-2160H/ARS-2320S with Samsung SSD

Hi Performance Testers, quite some time ago I swapped out SCSI HD from Octane2 and replaced it with ACARD ARS-2160H with SAMSUNG SSD (EVO 840 250GB). Since I got Onyx350/4 boxes I got a couple of additional ACARD ARS-2320S adaptors and put SAMSUNG SSD EVO 850 1TB in each of these and also updated EV...

Hi josehill & venomousepinecone,

ha ha ha ... as a poor sod with a physics degree, I have to admit you are right. We have been battling against entropy in parallel universes.

But the ignorant practical biologist in us refuses to give up the fight ;-)

Cheers from Oz,

Re: Maintaining Hardware / fesability of keeping hardware running

Hi Nekochaners, whether old machines are worth maintaining kind of gets to the “What do you use <xxx> for ?”, where <xxx> is your favourite old machine. Compared to some on Nekochan, I am modest collector. I have kept Octane2 in mostly working order, though at one point I stripped the entire machine...

Re: Origin 350 Burn-in-Software

Hi Thriiliamson,

there are a bunch of benchmarks outlined on Ian Mapleson’s SGI Depot site: http://www.sgidepot.co.uk/perfcomp.html

Ian is regular poster on nekochan.

Cheers,
