Re: Article: The Coming Software Apocalypse

I have a lot of IoT devices here for home automation, but they live behind a very strict firewall that cannot route to the Internet directly, and I manipulate their APIs directly instead of using whatever client they offer. I've always been a strong opponent to IoT. For as much as I throw around th...

Re: Article: The Coming Software Apocalypse

All I got out of that was that we rely far too much on automation for simple tasks, either to save money or because people are lazy. I mean, I get that is true in say, IoT. Otherwise modern programmers suck. Their teaching sucks. Their code sucks. I attended a university programming class where opti...

Re: Gallery gone?

I assume that as this forum slowly winds down form the active days of yesteryear it had to be pruned because it was simply consuming bandwidth for photos form members, many of who have not been active or years. Also, the gallery has been closed for new uploads for years. Aside form cool photos it no...

Re: How frequently you use your SGI (in 2017)?

The O2 is in my bedroom. It's plugged into a shunt relay power bar so that Saturday morning at 9AM (I do love how it supports auto power on) it and the external peripherals turn on and come up.
Then it typically sees IRC and gmail inbox use for most of the weekend.

Is it not possible that the flat dallas chip has caused the system controller to lose its mind? Have you strapped in a new battery yet?

Re: Too many beers? IBM PS/2 Model 70 MCA

I've owned a few MCA machines in the past from IBM's Tower to a very nice Apricot model [Q-something] which ran XENIX with it's rather cool predictive command line. The Apricot QI? I've been noticing a lot with IBM's proprietary disks used in the PS/2 line that while they often did not use the SMD ...

Looking at the pin designations on either end of the harness for the 25 pin D-sub, that doesn't look like RS-422 unfortunately. :? I spent $420CDN on TWO of these.... CGS_7675.JPG CGS_7684.JPG CGS_7687.JPG It's the Pioneer LC-V300 Autochanger for laserdiscs. Yes. Laserdiscs. It holds 72 discs in each cabinet and can play both sides. I was planning on replacing the cluster of milk crates I currently use to hold my collection wit...

Re: What pointless thing are you doing right now?

Today I cleaned the Minidisc transport in my car stereo because it got a blast of dust and stopped behaving correctly. After that I finally checked after owning it for ten years of my satellite radio actually worked. Turns out that not only is it still "in good standing" but SiriusXM had n...

Re: What pointless thing are you doing right now?

HP 9000 D350 with AutoRAID and UPS. ;) Also the 11/23 pooped itself while troubleshooting some card assignment issues. I can verify the chassis is still healthy if I put in my 11/73 boardset but now the 11/23 throws an error about a ROM issue and I can't even seem to jumper out the onboard bootstrap...

Re: What pointless thing are you doing right now?

Spent the day first admiring the new four camera setup I installed, plus a PTZ camera that's way up on the antenna mast so I can see clean across the valley. CGS_7640.JPG CGS_7641.JPG First problem: When it gets warm outside the PTZ camera starts consuming more power than the DC-DC regulator in the ...
