Re: NFS issues with Open Genera on Tru64

Sorry (but not really sorry) to revive a two-year-old thread, but I was having the exact same problem. I just set up OpenGenera 2.0 on a Compaq AlphaServer DS10L running Tru64 5.1B. I had NO luck at all with NFS. Exactly the same error message as the original poster. I was about ready to give up whe...

Re: Octane - dead power supply?

Just wanted to follow up to my own post here. It turns out that yes, it WAS a dead power supply. I took the plunge and bought an Ocatane2 power supply from eBay and it arrived today. Dropped it in, and my Octane now works. Woohoo! Turns out I have an IP30 with SI graphics. Acceptable. I wish it were...

Re: Octane - dead power supply?

Try reseating everything, and try again. Sometimes things need an extra shove to get them seated (tho that isn't common with an octane unless the whole machine is bent) I reseated everything, unfortunately there's no change. I inspected the compression connectors as best I could and didn't see anyt...

Octane - dead power supply?

Hey folks, I've been wanting an Octane for ages, and I just found one for the grand total of $60. I couldn't pass it up at that price. I was told it was fully functional, but hadn't been booted in many years. I got it home and took everything modular apart to clean it out -- it had years of dust bui...

Re: Wanted: Indigo Mouse & Keyboard Cable

I have the Indigo / Onyx keyboard cables but they are the long ones. So if you don't mind having 10 feet of extra cable under the desk you can have it for the cost of shipping. PM me your address and I will send it out. John Hi John, Many thanks. I'll check the local surplus computer parts store he...

Re: Wanted: Indigo Mouse & Keyboard Cable

Try looking for a PS/2 male-male cable at local stores. It'll work. D'oh, why didn't I think of that? Of course, you're right. We have a local surplus electronics shop here called WeirdStuff Warehouse that will absolutely have PS2 keyboard cables -- and if they don't have exactly the right kind, I ...

Magnificent. I didn't know this existed, but I'm glad it does. I just bought one, so I can at least use my Indy keyboard and mouse in the meantime. Thank you for pointing it out!

Wanted: Indigo Mouse & Keyboard Cable

Hey everyone, WELL! I'm as frustrated as can be. Long story short, we just moved, and I finally have room to store all of my vintage computers at home. So I emptied out our storage unit, grabbed my Indigo Elan to set up, but... augh! I can't find the mouse or the keyboard's cable anywhere. =( It's d...

Re: 4.0.5

In general, though, I would seriously ask what you would like to get out of 4.0.5 on a fairly high-spec machine. I have nothing of tangible value to get out of it. Certainly, for actual day-to-day use I would continue to use 5.3 on my R4K. It's fast and stable. The only excuse I have is that I like...

Old IRIX (4.0.5) -- can it still be found?

I confess that I am something of a software archaeologist. I love finding and running very old software. I like to think that I'm helping to preserve it in some small way. With that in mind, does anyone know where I can find IRIX 4.0.5 for the Indigo R4000? If this is a forbidden question, I will no...

That was fast! Thanks for the find!

I notice this list is from 1998, so it might (or might not) be out of date... I'll go over it and compare it to the list of currently available 5.3 patches to see what's replaced what.

IRIX 5.3 Required/Recommended Patch Set ?

I finally have my old dream machine, an Indigo R4K Elan! After comparing performance, I've decided to stick with IRIX 5.3 on the wee beasty. 6.5.22 runs, but it's dog slow. But imagine my chagrin when I discovered that I can no longer find the Required / Recommended patch set for 5.3! Supportfolio o...

I just want to clarify my previous post. I don't in any way want to suggest that SGI make IRIX open source. The work involved in doing that would be astronomical, they'd have almost no incentive. Instead, what I was suggesting is that it might be possible to get SGI to offer a hobbyist license . Tha...

Well, poo. Things change, and nothing is forever, but it's still pretty sad to see an end to IRIX. Life will go on, though. What I'd like to do now is see if we can get SGI to release IRIX (older versions, at least) with a hobbyist license, like HP/Compaq/DIGITAL did with OpenVMS. I'm a fan of histo...

It started in college! In 1992 or 1993, UNIXworld magazine featured an IRIS Indigo on the cover, and I fell in love with it. I lusted after Crimsons and Indigos throughout college, and later the Indigo 2 and Onyx. After college, I got lucky and worked at SGI for a while. I got my first Indigo from t...
