Re: Taking a stab at IRIX porting; looking for a shell ...

I shiver at the thought of building FireFox on an O2. When I was trying to keep IRIX supported as a pkgsrc platform, all my work was on a 195MHz O2. It was an uphill battle, though. OTOH, I was also trying to port that framework to A/UX on a 33MHz Quadra. Retro-computing does have it's challenges!

Those are nice systems! Hopefully someday I will find one a little closer to me.

Re: http://en.wikipedia.org/ down - did you feel affected?

Typical bonehead "fire off a cannon to kill a gnat" legislation. Anybody here tried to run for office, and get to a position to actually have some impact on stuff like this? Even helped a campaign of someone clueful? Or is moaning and complaining about it more your speed? I'd love to run f...

I'd love to use MIPSpro instead of gcc, but unfortunately it's not free. :( :? That's why so many of us are stuck with gcc.

Abandonware should be free.

The U10 would be a nice step up from my U5, but alas, I'm half a continent away.

Re: WWDC, Lion (Mac OS X 10.7), etc.

I'm pretty sure that AAC is a subpart of MPEG-4, so compatibility is more than just Apple devices. I think I even remember there being replacement software for several players that supports AAC/MP4 audio, though I haven't used it. I'd always heard that, too, so it's always surprised me that more pl...

Re: WWDC, Lion (Mac OS X 10.7), etc.

the prospect of accidentally resizing windows when trying to move them is not a good one. Apple will probably do any-edge resizing better than it's been done before, but I still think it's a bad idea. I sometimes would appreciate the ability to drag any edge to resize, but I still believe in the or...

Re: 180Mhz O2: reason for slow internet browsing

I've said this before, but bringing WebKit to IRIX would be ideal (far more so than porting Firefox 3). It's a complex port, but a longer-term goal I want to see accomplished. I assume we couldn't do any benchmarking right now, with Firefox 2 alone. Probably easier than porting FF too—smaller codeb...

Benchmarking various layout/javascript engines on IRIX/MIPS would be interesting. Webkit vs Dillo vs Netsurf vs Gecko.

I use ShapeShifter from Unsanity for awhile, but I believe it's not compatible with 10.5 and up. Apple doesn't like you customizing the UI at all. :( :x

Good point is that it's a LOT faster than my Ultra 5. If someone were to give me one, I sure wouldn't turn it away. :D

Re: troubleshooting Sol9 lockup

Assuming I did get connected to a serial port, could I verify definitively the IP stack had taken a dump? It's possible, albeit unlikely, that something else is causing nfsd and telnetd to die coincidentally.
