Re: SGI Octane: IRIX always outputs to serial terminal

If the previous owner installed Irix on that machine and the graphics board was not showing up due to a poor connection to the frontplane or a dead graphics board, I don't believe the installer would include the graphics subsystem. Could explain why Irix is lacking the required drivers. Somebody cor...

Re: SGI Octane: IRIX always outputs to serial terminal

Your graphics board is conspicuously absent from your hinv. Try re-seating the board.

Re: WTB skins/plastics

If anyone at SGI had a conscience they would release the models for all their skins so we could start making our own replacements. But nooooo, they will never do that because we might put SGI logos or (worse) funky non-SGI logos on our homemade skins, and as a result SGI might be made to look bad.....

Challenge Rack Side Panel

On a scale of 1-10, how likely am I to be able to get a replacement black plastic side panel for a Challenge rack? The one I picked up yesterday is missing one...

Re: [ chicago ] sgi lot

That Octane 1.5 was my very first SGI. I kinda miss it, but unfortunately I wouldn't even have anything to do with it other than display it. I hope it goes to a good home!

Challenge XL Vault specs

So a couple of Challenge XL Vaults popped up on craigslist for free...anybody know if they will accommodate standard sized rackmount gear? Round mounting holes or square? Basically wondering if it's worth my time to hook up my trailer and drive into the city to get one or both of them...assuming the...

Re: The Problem with Apple

I choose Apple hardware specifically because I don't have to dick around with it. And as far as "expandability" goes, who stores more than a few dozen gigabytes of data locally anymore? I can't remember the last time I filled up my laptop's SSD. I've got my music collection, and that's abo...

Re: WTB: Alpha in desktop/minitower form factor

But they are often very, very expensive on fleabay. Even the older Alphastations often go for thousands of dollars "Really?" I say, looking at the Alphastation 500 sitting under my desk that I got for free, and haven't touched yet... Funny. I had a digital personal workstation 500au that ...

Re: Old Silicon Graphics Computer Systems mouse pad

Thanks. I don't ever recall there being any I2's around the department by the time I got there, but I believe you. We did have a bunch of Indys that people used as monitor stands, an O2, the aforementioned Octane, an Onyx rack, and a lonely Challenge L deskside sitting unused in a corner in the base...

Old Silicon Graphics Computer Systems mouse pad

Anybody have any idea what vintage this mousepad is? I permanently borrowed it from an old job over a decade ago. It was sitting on a desk with an Octane that was hooked up to an ImmersaDesk that hadn't been turned on in years. Every once in a while, I scan ebay for another one, just in case this on...

Re: Japanese Tools

I have an SK hand tools SAE/Metric socket set as well as a set of their SAE combo wrenches. I know the topic is Japanese tools, but they are made in the good old US of A...one of the few that still are. Really nice stuff. Also, I would also second Harbor Freight since all of their hand tools have a ...

Re: free not-working Mac G5 DP 1.8

I used to be all "Man I wish I was closer to that thing!"

Now I am all "I'm glad I'm just far enough away from that thing that I can't be arsed to go pick it up."

I did think real hard about it for a couple of minutes, though, if that's any consolation.

Re: Cobalt Thread

I see a Qube2 on ebay that's near me, but there's no indication of whether or not it comes with the external PSU. Is this part impossible to source? How hard would it be to retrofit something?
